Clutch spring nuts
« on: 07 September, 2022, 17:54:58 »
 :) :) :) :)

Just reassembling A65 4spring clutch and am finding "stiffness" in a couple of the nuts so I want to run a tap through them.  I guess they are 1/4 BSC but not sure. Would someone like to confirm that please. Thank you.

I believe it is 26 tpi BSC but the difference with 26 tpi BSF is negligible (55 deg thread angle versus 60 deg thread angle) and so either tap will be fine in practice.

Thanks for that. I too believe its cycle. The trouble with the wrong angle is that it can distort the thread.

In this case, I think the threads will be so worn that a slightly wrong thread angle would not be noticeable :)

I made up a set of brass nuts for the B40, 1/4 BSF no problem with them going on.
always worth running a normal nut down before  tapping out the clutch nuts.

must have an old BSC nut lying around somewhere.

26 CEI. Just one nut with something a bit sticky. ran a tap through it---job jobbed. Threads as good as new all round

Talking of running BSF through new nuts, Were the later models BSF cos I definitely have some clutch nuts that simply wont run. But as I've never needed them I haven't checked the thread.. I'll check them out as they were defo supplied for Beesa.

I haven't checked but could be 28 tpi UNF.

About 15+ years ago I was in a local hardware supplier and they were just going totally metric.(Shelf space and declining imperial sales) So I bought the complete remaing Imperial stock. I've nearly run out of stuff now but I had a good run. Regret there was no CEI in it.

As far as I can see from the parts books, the earlier 4-spring clutches used nuts with a BSC thread whereas, all the way to 1972, the 3-spring clutches used BSF nuts.

30 odd years ago, our stores had a clear out, the majority of UNF/C, BSF/W, BA. UN, bushes, pop rivets, bearings etc were deemed as not required for future use. (modern railway brake systems dont need 200 UNF nuts or bolts  only metric and a few BSF). Our machine stores didnt require many obscure standard and purpose made taps and dies.
working on nights involved a great deal of skip diving. at the time, the two boys were finished with baby milk, the garage was full of soon to be filled tins.
unfortunately due to a house move many fastners were sold, a mini restock a few years later ended going to a rally driving mate to look after while we moved house again. To this date, Ive never collected them, probably skipped by now.
still have a good supply of phos bronze bushes, roller bearings and pop rivits as well as standard metric  fastners BUT I do still have many taps and dies.
