Fitting replacement gear box
(1/1)
TTJOHN:
Just been fitting another gearbox to my A10 plunger Golden Flash, what a job that turned out to be, taking out the engine to part the box from the engine, (bolt up type) I was a useful experience though as I did find one or two other problems, which could have turned out real bad if they had been left. It's on the way up again now, hopefully it should be finish tomorrow, two full days on the thing and my leg muscles are aching like mad, you never realise that we are not so young and fit as we used to be.

DAVE BRADY:
Hi John,
Thinking back a few years I did mange to get the gearbox out without removing the engine but it was very fiddly and probably involved loosening the engine anyway.
The most important thing on refitting is to ensure the bolts holding the gearbox to the engine are tight and also the two that come up through the frame into the bottom/back of the gearbox are tight. Re-tighten after a few miles just in case.
Many cases are severely damaged due to these being or becoming slack.
Dave.
TTJOHN:
Dave,
all done now but I don't want to do that job again, I think I spent three whole days doing it, in this hot weather, however, I did see more problems while doing this, the first was that the drive sprocket was loose on the gear box shaft, allowing the chain to rub against the primary casing, the other was with the dynamo, the belt drive pulley, which I sorted.
I don't really think it's worth try to get the box out separately as it's easy enough to remove the complete engine but what I did notice was that the two securing studs underneath the frame were different size 5/16th from the one I removed 3/8th, I can olny guess that someone previously had drilled and re-tapped oversize.
