Before I'm past it
« on: 29 May, 2022, 10:29:39 »
Morning all,

I've had my 1965 B40F since January 2018, and am now thinking of having a change. Many of you will be familiar with various aspects of it, having advised me on numerous repairs/improvements. Anyway I think I'll advertise it for sale soon, so I can have a change (before I'm too old and decrepit!) If anybody is interested, please send me a personal message. I think 2,700 would be a fair price.

Phil

Hi Phil, not sure about prices on B40F but 2700 sounds cheap for any BSA of that era in decent nick.

There's a classic bike auction at the national motorbike museum in July, might be worth asking them their opinion. The sale is conducted by H&H Auctions, their details are easy enough to find

Good luck
Chris

Well I'd say it's in decent nick, so I'll look into it. Thanks very much, Chris.

The other place I use to check prices is https://www.newsnow.co.uk. You can put search criteria in (like 'BSA') and get a daily digest of new ads of bikes for sale. It doesn't list bikes itself, but links in to ads for sales on other sites like ebay, gumtree etc. You can get a feel for going prices for your favourite models and highlight anything that looks like a bargain.

Any ideas what you fancy next? One of these years I'd love to have a go at a Cafe racer

I think the price is in the right ball park - unfortunately, B40's are not one of the most sought after BSA's. It's best to try and sell privately. In general, auctions impose a seller's fee of the order of 25% and eBay impose a fee of 10%.

Hi,
The May issue of The Star has three very tidy looking C15s.  Two at 2,200 and the other at 2,500.
Why not try to keep it in the family and advertise it in The Star and on this Forum first?
A few up to date photos will help.

Dave.

I'll do that. Seems fair enough, as this forum has been such a huge help to me. But I wonder how many ads in The Star and on this forum result in a sale. Anybody have an idea?     Phil

Just been looking on gumtree and ebay. As Chris says, they're generally a higher price than I was thinking. Hard to judge really as most are trade. Maybe I'll just ask a little bit more. Don't want to ask too much within the club, I'd want to be fair.

 :) :) :) :) :)

In truth you simply decide your price. Bear in mind you can always decrease it. Essentially its value is what anyone is prepared to pay.
The asking price seen in adverts often has no realistic return at asking. You never know someone may actually be looking for your specific the day you advertise.

The B40F is just the 1965 model which is distinguished from the earlier models in using side points rather than a distributor. It remained in this form until phased out at the end of the 1967 season.

sold the T100 on ebay, not on but via, recommended prospective buyers view first. then a sale is carried out off ebay so no fee apart from listing. you get a bigger audience. my buyer drove 4 hours!! Im looking at American cars now and looking at around 3 hour drives.

when recomending buyers view first, its better that way as they can see faults , haggle the price, etc rather than buy blind then complain after.

tried a few bikes on gumtree, which is partly owned by ebay anyway, all I ever got from any type of sale there is time wasters, never turn up, ask a question etc . If going on ebay, you have a small amount of security as registered buyers should have a name and/or address registered. give your address to gumtree buyer and they dont turn up , until midnight and your bike disappears.

only problem I see with the star, is critical specialist buyers, limited buyers to those already owning or members only, have to wait a month to get it in print.

just my views from the past experiences.

Thanks for your thoughts. I've put it in the For Sale section of this forum, and have asked the editor if I can place an ad in The Star.  Haven't upped the price as I don't want to spend ages trying to sell it.  Phil

The bike is now sold.

Many thanks to the people on this forum who have been so helpful to me over the past four years when I've been working on it.

Now comes the excitement of wondering what to get next.
