1946 B31 - Steering head bearing (and some other parts)
« on: 18 January, 2022, 13:23:14 »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for a steering head bearing top cone part No. 65-5319.  The bearings on the 1946 B31 are different than the later ones (1" inner diameter), and were also used on Bantams.  Unfortunatetly I haven't been able to find one anywhere, and am hopping someone might have one lying around.  At the moment this small part is keeping me from coming further with the restoration. Alternatively, does anyone know of a suitable taper bearing that would fit?

I am also looking for some further parts which are missing:
Front brake plate part No. 65-5895
Rear brake anchor strap part No. 65-6275
Front Engine Plate cover part No. 65-4431

...and a complete gearbox....  Mine is too far gone to try saving it (bike was found in very poor condition with water and mud inside...).  I would actually rather use the later gearbox introduced in 1948 as the parts for the early one are impossible to find.  I know the differences and would mmodify the later box to fit my 1946 bike.

So if anyone can help, I would be very grateful.  I am located in Germany.

Cheers,
Gui

Isn't there a problem with using a later gearbox on the early B31s. I think the later ones have a wider mounting lug which needs to be cut down.

Yes, you are right, but it can be done.  There’s a threat here in the forum about it.
I believe it’s my better option considering the state of my original gearbox and the difficulty in getting parts for it.

That's the option I would go for.

Sorry, I can't help with parts but I have fitted a later box to my 1946 B33.
I'm also in Germany (Würzburg) and if I can help let me know.
Cheers

Thanks Pete, I’m in Helmstedt. What I need I’ve listed above, so if you hear anything let me know. I will come back to you for details on the mod, once I find a gearbox 😀

Thanks Bess,
I already found a brake plate and the strap I fabricated one myself. The next big work will be the gearbox and clutch (I’m fitting a later one). I’m sure I will need some parts but I shall see when I open the box up.
Cheers
