Brakes 1934 blue star

Hi the brakes on the above bike are not locking even at low speeds and fail to stop the bike. I do not yet know if they need bedding in or are contaminated with oil /grease,
I have looked for a technical sheet on the members area , can any one advise on drawings etc to show how to inspect and or dismantle and replace .

Hi, It is very straightforward to take the front wheel out and the brake plate with shoes should the be easily accessible. Modern, non asbestos linings, are generally not as effective as the original asbestos ones. You will soon find out if there is grease on the shoes. If they need bedding in they will only be worn on the leading edge.

Undo the front brake cable from the brake lever on the brake drum. The wheel is held in by the wheel spindle. Undo the nut and withdraw the spindle. The wheel should then be free to remove. Remove brake plate and examine the drum & shoes.

Thanks have removed both and are possibly original shoes down to copper rivets . Sending away to Villiers for relining as per the advice of the club .

The drums are ok not pitted when cleaned with Aspen fuel.
