Grease in gearboxes

A few months??? back I brought up this subject as an alternative gearbox lubrication, and then forgot all about it. The gent that put me on to it has a 500 Royal Enfield about 1955 model. He put said grease in the box when he rebuilt it 30,000 miles back and it is still going strong. So I am about to do the same with my M20, that has never been started since I took it off the bench about 3 years back. Right at this moment I cant remeber what the grease is called.

This type of grease was available when the gearbox was designed.
It might be worth giving some thought as to why BSA didn't use or recommend it.

Yep, a bloody good point.

The grease does specify that it is suitable for 'gearboxes designed to operate with a semi-fluid grease' therefore, it is presumably not suitable for ones that weren't designed for it.

Royal Enfield of that era were grease boxes, the BSA M20/21 are not

In an M20 gearbox the constant gears on the layshaft are fed oil from a drilling in the shaft itself, and hence the gears are lubricated from the inside. I wouldn't trust grease (semi-fluid or otherwise) to make this journey (I am pretty sure it is the layshaft rather than the mainshaft)
