1949 Rear Brake Drum
« on: 30 March, 2017, 21:39:57 »
Hi,
I am restoring a 1949 B31 and have looked at the rear sprocket and decided that it is not good enough, can any body tell me where to buy a new one or do I have to machine off the old teeth and weld on new.
The rear drum is not currently attached to the hub, I am assuming from what I have read is that they were riveted on, can you just use bolts or do I have to make rivets?.

Thanks for any advice.
Cheers
Andy

Andy

Presume its a rigid not plunger?

If rigid I think you will find it hard to find a new one but there are engineers who will retooth for you - one currently advertises in Old Bike Mart - John Hemming Engineering 01547 530759 - I have not used him. Those drums are thin so you need the braking surface to be good I dont think there is enough metal to skim.

Hello, Andy. Did you ever find a new rear sprocket? The reason I ask is because I have the exact same problem. Worn B31 rigid rear sprocket needs to be replaced, but nobody seems to sell them. I have posted a question on this in the forum today.

I will face the problem one day on my M33. Years ago it meant the rear hub had to be scrapped. I think I would look into cutting off the rivets and adapting another sprocket.

Iím approaching a similar issue on my 1949 B31
I cant find a rear hub ( Type 9 on the Draganfly site description)

E bay seem to have whole rear wheels from India though, 19Ē but Iím not really sure these would fit, and its a long way to send them back!
Has anyone tried these?
