B44 VS Tyres

Evening all

So my Repatriated 1967 B44VS round barrel is nearly finished. Only 2500 on the clock the bores look ace. Looks like someone gave up on the starting traumas and the clutch.so put it in the garage.

I’ve left it as it is lumps, bumps and rusty bits. As it will only be this way once.

The Dunlop trials universal look as new. But I know they will more than likely be like Bakelite now. So my question is what are you guys shedding yours with ?

Hi,

If you really love the trials tyres then go for them again but compromise on the road performance.  If going with road tyres then there are lot of opinions out there but I have been using Avon Road Riders for many years and many thousands of miles and find them to be a very good tyre made with modern compounds.  I think Continental and Metzler do the classic sizes as well and are quality tyres.
Some people but cheap tyres on and find them OK but for me quality always wins when it comes to safety.

I mainly goes on paved or unpaved roads with the Victors. One has Avon SM Mk II, and the other one has Dunlop K70. As I don't push them hard and rarely ride in rain or snow, I can't feel any difference. Though I prefer the look of the K70.

I agree about the quality/safety aspect. when you consider that with properly inflated tyres under load you are sitting on about 15 to 18 square inches of rubber on each tyre I guess you want something a bit certain under you.

Hi,

I believe that the Avon SM MkII and Dunlop K70 also use modern compounds and out of the two I would go for the K70.  I think the K70 was originally developed as a front tyre to go with the early triangular racing tyres and it has a better profile for going around corners.

I've put Heidenau tyres on my US spec B25. They look a lot like the Dunlops, but were cheaper. I think they're a decent brand.

Hi,

Heidenau tyres are a more budget German tyre that will probably be OK for most use but they do seem to get criticised when pushed or in less than ideal conditions.

I put a new set of Metzeler Perfect 3.23-18 and 3.50-18 road tyres on my B44R last year, since it had those on it when it was imported back from the States.  I'm really pleased with them and can feel it holding the road well on those.  They're not too expensive and I've hardly taken the "pimples" off them yet, so they should be good for a few thousand miles.  I tried to get hold of Dunlops at the time but
they were like gold dust.  I contacted Metzeler direct via email and they were very helpful with technical support.  One thing I learned was all tyres have the date of manufacture on them and that's just as important as tread depth.
