Amal 626 over stamped numbers

Whilst refurbishing the Amal 626 carburettors for my Rocket 3 I have noticed various numbers/letters stamped on and crossed out. The picture shows the 47 stamped over with a cross and the number 61 stamped on the body. The other 2 are stamped in a similar manner. The number 47 refers to the 1971/72 range, whilst the 61 refers to the 1972 range of the Rocket 3. I'm just interested into why this would have been done. Would this have been done by BSA or Amal. There is no difference between a number 47 and a 61 in respect of setup, same main jet , slide size etc.

Hi Rob,

As nobody else has replied I thought I would hazard a guess.  You have established that there no difference in the carbs. other than for a different year so why over stamp one number and replace it with another?
The first thing I notice is that the stamp used for the X and the 61 are a different font to the original.  This would imply that it was not Amal that did this as surely they would have used the same stamp and font.  So it looks like BSA did this.  Perhaps it was to differentiate the new model range by introducing a specific carb. designation.  Why when they are the same as the previous carbs. and it is also so blatant that they have done this.  I like speculation.

Thanks for your reply Dave. I had a suspicion that this might be the case, as you say the font of the stamping is different. I guess what does seem strange to me is that the number 626/47 carb is fitted to the 1972 Triple range, and the 626/61 range was fitted the the 1972 range. Why bother to change the numbering, the carb specification is the same, even though there were changes the Rocket 3 specification for 1972.

The 1969 range was fitted with 626/14 626/15 626/16
The 1971- 1972 range was fitted with 626/61 626/62 626/63
The 1972 range was fitted with 626/47 626/48 626/49

The only difference between the 1969 range and the later years is the throttle slide changing from 3 to 3.5
