Full reply pm sent Phil, for others benefit it's 1.5m long.

I was tempted to purchase one from Screwfix, it was "on offer" at around £25.00 - I decided against it and then a couple of days later  I was fed up with being cold in the shed so I popped back to Screwfix, and guess what, it had increased in price to over £40.00! I still purchased it whilst telling myself not to be cynical when goods are offered "on offer" in future. It has no name or Country of origin on it, but it works well, no smell and quite a few variable options. It is bright red, circular with a reasonable length of lead.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts on this. After much deliberation (as usual) I've ordered the Dimplex one from Argos, as per Group Leader's link.  Fingers crossed.

I got one of the oil filled radiators, useless. I will plod on with my paraffin heater, I do have some ventilation and it keeps my tea warm. More important I have two good fire extinguishers in the garage, too much Avgas 100 in storage.

I used to use a 2 kw, two bar electric fire in my ten foot square shed. The fire is older than I am, so pre 1959. I only used it on one bar and it soon got the place warm, though I couldn't stand too close in front of it without scorching my overalls. I now use an oil filled radiator, and though it takes a little longer to get up to temperature, it does the job and I don't need to avoid standing right next to it. The element is inside the oil so I can also wash parts and balance them on the top grill to dry, but with the old fire that's asking for sparks and bangs.

Hi,the exact problem I have,to bloomin cold in the garage, first I put loads of cardboard on the floor, insulates your feet and catches all the crux ect, just remember to change it before it becomes a fire risk, then personally a bought a cheap 2kw  blow heater from a local electrical wholesalers, they need the business at the moment, no matter how small,  anyway it works well enough as long as the good lady keeps the hot tea coming.happy spannering,  Dave.

hi Phil did you look at halogen heaters I have heard they are cheap to run about 10p an hour, just a thought ,Roy

Phil C

No I didn't Roy. But thanks for mentioning them anyway. My new Dimplex has arrived. Haven't opened the box yet. Off to get my first jab today! Hurray!   Phil

Group Leader

That was quick Phil!

Are Argos doing a special "Buy a heater get a free Covid jab" deal then?    Still waiting for my first one  ;D

I was a bit surprised when I got the message inviting me to phone and book a jab. My wife too. I'm 67, she's 65. Anyway, great news for us.  Regarding the heater, I ordered it yesterday and it arrived yesterday early evening. Delivery cost (£3.99, I think) was the same no matter which delivery slot I chose. So yes, very pleased, although I think Mitchell makes a good point about buying local. Surprised, and pleased to see how compact the heater is.  Given the weather, I imagine heater sales must be soaring at the moment.  Phil

Sadly my new heater was a disappointment. Even on full setting it just gave out a gentle flow of warm air which made no discernible difference to the temperature in the garage even after about two hours. That's a 2kw heater, and I think the max for 230 volts is 3kw. If a 2kw job is so ineffective then I can't see 3 kw being very good either. Looks like I might just have to wait for milder weather.  Phil

A 2 KW fan heater will make all the difference, you can direct the heat. Oil filled rads are a waste of time.

It sounds faulty to me. A 2 kw heater should be enough to warm up a garage, even during these recent very cold days.

Phil C

Forgot to mention, the garage is not flat-roofed, so obviously that means more space to heat, but even so...

Seems to give out a higher heat when I use it in the house compared with in the garage. I guess that makes sense as the air it takes in is colder in the garage than in the house, so it has more work to do.   Phil
