Thanks for the replies.
It's for a friends bike that I look after. He is a tad heavy handed with anything mechanical so I agreed to spanner on it before he bought it. We have the gentlemans ride looming and it does leak quite badly from the banjo. He will be dressed in borrowed tweeds for the ride and doesn't want to get oil on them! I don't really have time to take it apart and then order parts at the moment so the help in sizing them is very grateful. I have ordered them already.

Anyone tried dowty seals instead of fibre washers on the oil tank banjo on a 1957 A7? If so what sizes did you use.

I managed to view some of the engineering drawings and even with no shims or cup maximum should in theory be 20 thou of end float. Which is not enough to shut off the rod feed through the timing side bush. However if vibration set in I would imagine the timing side bush could be worn considerably faster. I just wondered if anyone had experience of "leaving it too late" I've surfed as you do and there is a lot of much more experienced people out there as I'm a novice with old Brit bikes. I was a mechanical engineer during most of my working career but every day is a school day as they say.

I have an a65 with 12 thou of end float. As soon as the engine fires up it pulls the crank to the timing side. With a DTI on the stator end revving gently it stays this way, only on stopping the engine does it "clunk" back to the left as it literally stops. I stupidly forgot to check end float when the engine was apart for a gearbox problem earlier in the year. The engine has done very little mileage for approx. ten years and has had the timing side bush done just before I bought it last year. I am presuming that the end float was incorrectly set up then. So far I have added about 2k to it with only about 400 miles since I noticed the issue and as it will have the engine stripped totally in a few months I was wondering what the general consensus was regarding still using it? Oil pressure is spot on and from the crank and timing side bush drawings the oil will never be cut off to the rods. I can see the possibility that the oil pump outer casting may touch but my opinion is I would need about 20 thou to have that problem. Am I looking on the bright side or am I leaving myself open to a catastrophe I have over looked! I have the Distinguished gentleman's ride in a few weeks and hoping for a few more jaunts before winter but that's about it really.

That explains it. Fantastic, thanks for that. I've only had the bike about 8 months and I'm trying to gather history for it. I had a gearbox problem recently and while it was apart I noticed a number of things that had been tinkered with. It has had a cylinder hone, new timing side bush, new valves and valve guides so I was wondering if the engine had been rebuilt by a builder who had stamped a number on it! I currently have 10 thou of end float on the crank though so my current thinking is I should have split the cases and checked everything. I was keen to get it back on the road and didn't check end float. DOH!

I have noticed a number stamped into my engine casing on an a65. Very small, reading 806? I can't find any reference to it in any of the manuals. It looks fresher than the engine numbers.

Bought direct from their website with a debit card. Not much protection with a debit unfortunately but I have sent a retrieval letter to my bank just in case. That's not bound by law so up to my bank to contact the vendor first. Good luck with that though as I have phoned, emailed a few times a day for the last week and cannot get a reply!
75.00 would not really be worth claiming back through the small claims court either so all I can do really is advise people to be careful in dealing with them.

Does anyone out there know where I can get a 22 tooth gear for a 1968 A65, part number 68 3120. My first ride out ended with a van ride home due to one of the gear dogs braking off. I ordered one from a company who I'm guessing might not supply it (see my last post) Back online I went and now I'm really struggling to find one, nearest so far is the Netherlands!

Hi all,

I have ordered a gearbox part from a CBM ( I parted with my cash and received an invoice back on the 2nd April. Has anyone had dealings with this supplier?
I have had no parts, no contact and no answers to emails. The phone just rings and rings. I googled the address and its a suburban road with just ordinary homes on it? On surfing further a Norton website member is stating the same problems as I'm having. He lost 200+ so isn't very happy at all. I'm not writing my 70 off just yet but its looking like it!

Here's hoping but maybe a note to check first before using them.

Anyone found a magnetic gearbox drain plug for an a65. I've just had to dismantle the gearbox due to second gear losing a lug so while I was in there I thought I would look into a magnetic plug. 1/2 inch UNC plugs don't seem to be around using the normal google searches etc.
