Singles / Re: C15 rebuild
« on: 08 June, 2017, 12:25:31 »
The 375/4 was originally fitted to the C11G and C12 250cc bikes 1955-1958.

The bore is 25/32 inch and, if your SS80 is home market not USA type then the 376 originally fitted would have been 1 inch bore (1 1/16 if US market). That is quite a step down in bore size. (The standard C15 had a 7/8 inch bore carb)

Your bike will probably go OK but not as well as it would with the right size carb and you may need to experiment with different jets and slide for best running.

Follow the link to the BSAOC website for details of dating certificates registration etc.

http://www.bsaownersclub.co.uk/machine.html

You will need a complete assembled bike to apply for V5C rather than a box of parts.

Also se the DVLA site for info;

I would say you have got a 1949 500cc M33 overhead valve.  Engine was shared with the 500 cc B33.

Basically designed as a sidecar bike.

The frame was also used for the 500cc M20 and  600cc M21 side valve engines.

I would have expected to find the engine number on the right hand side just beneath the cylinder joint. An M33 engine from 1949 would start ZM33

The 66 1641 sounds like  B31/B33/M33 crankcase casting number. So I suspect at least the crankcase has been replaced at some time in its life.

Below is from the 1949 catalogue.

Post a photo and/or engine and frame numbers and someone will be able to help.

Or go to BSAOC website and research under "machine dating" tab.

Twins / Re: A65 - Ace Bars - cable lengths
« on: 07 June, 2017, 12:55:33 »
Non standard cable lengths are very individual to the bike.

The old Romac and Clarkes cable catalogues I have only list lengths for standard and western bar , nothing for Ace or clip ons.

All I can suggest is that you ensure that the cables do not go tight and start to operate the controls when the bars are turned to full lock either way, which can happen if made too short.

Twins / Re: 1965 A65 ignition timing

Looking at the Pitmans book of BSA they advise time on the A50 figures. The 1966 on manuals show the timings as 34 btdc.

I would try 34 to start with and adjust if necessary.

That good news.

Numbers followed by letters is OK - way back, when Local Tax Offices ran out of  letters followed by numbers they changed to numbers followed by letters.

For example in 1956 Surrey County Council issued a series of 3 numbers follwed by letters APA.

As number plates were made up locally the styles vary on what was available- silver on black pressed, stick on white on blackand raised white on black for example.

The only way is to strip the ead off and check.

Assuming the springs and collars are correctly assembled is the valve bent or too tight in the guide, if the engine has been run with new valve and presume new guide is there a build up of carbon on either or both?

The paper one was listed for the C25 and in October 1967 it was changed to a thicker gasket from a composite material.

Part of parts service bulletin G45 from October 1967 attached below.

The catalogues for 1966/67/68 certainly shows Spitfires as supplied with light alloy rims as standard.

« on: 02 June, 2017, 11:31:30 »
Read up and become fully aquainted with the workings of your bike. There is a lot of literature out there you could do worse than get the "Rupert Ratio" Unit singles manuals.

The engine and cycle parts need to be in good condition and properly adjusted.

Be realistic in what you expect from it, the bike is 56 years old and when new was claimed to produce a modest 15 BHP for the standard "Star" and a bit more if you have the SS80.

Most riders are a bit bigger than those who rode them back then.

The easiest way to more speed is a bigger bike.

Dependinf on the fit.

You could try wrapping the pipe with PTFE tape.

You could try a high temperature silicone such as Loctite 5920 on its own or with PTFE tape.

You could try a simple exhaust sealant such as Halfords on its own or with PTFE tape.

I use the latter successfully on my A10, applied to the pipe rather than the port to avoid getting the product in the engine.

Twins / Re: Speedo oil seal
« on: 29 May, 2017, 16:32:25 »
The original zinc alloy speedo drive bushes were fitted with a square section rubber ring, in the machined groove marked with arrow at top of photo.

I use a suitable size o ring here, you should be able to find one in the boxes of assorted o rings on sale.

This is to seal between the bush and gearbox outer cover and will not stop oil dripping out of the speedo cable, if that is the problem (quite common).

Some of the later speedo drive shafts are machined to take a very flimsy o ring, part 40 3039 (which nobody seems to sell), indicated by the bottom arrow in the photo. This is supposed to stop oil getting into the speedo cable, from where oil drips at the point the alloy ferrule is crimped to the speedo cable outer.

I have found that cables with a circular crimp keep the oil in more successfully than those with the hexagonal crimp.

Singles / Re: Another question about C15 carb
« on: 27 May, 2017, 12:36:43 »
The 626 is 26 mm (just over 1inch) bore which is larger than the 7/8 inch bore of the 375 carb which will probably effect tuning the settings.
