Twins / Re: A65 Clutch
« on: 05 March, 2019, 14:13:29 »
Depends on which clutch you have.

The 1962-65 with 4 springs used a plain nut and tab washer.

The 1966 on with 3 springs used a self locking nut.

Mike

The idler shaft seal changed for 1969 on.  I suspect your seal set has one for 1962-68 and one for 1969 on.

Twins / Re: Wheel Question
« on: 27 February, 2019, 20:41:08 »
During the 1960s bikes were often modified by owners who sought to improve performance for the use the bike was to be put and/or to produce an individual machine not like the next one. The Spitfire was used for competitive riding and the owner may have wanted to reduce the weight by using these light alloy hubs rather than the original cast  front.

The modifications are part of the bikes history but I think these brakes are just 6 inch diameter and I wonder how effective they would be on a 650.

They are made by the British Hub company and were fitted to the mid 1960s AJS and Matchless 250 singles and some Greeves bikes and probably others.

See this ebay item, it shows the trade mark;

The 1959 Shooting Star would have 4 inch badges. The other model A twins that year would have had 3 1/4 inch badges.

The "XC" is a 1969 season (August 1968- July 1969) model from December 1968.

A50 RC means R for Royal star and C for 1969 season.

You dont need to remove the circlip it just holds the bearing cover and bearing.

If you hub cap is like this one then you will find a number of tabs on the cover which have been folded in to secure it to the hub. I usually use a soft drift to knock it on the edge to remove.

The first B40F bikes left the factory in September 1964 and were 1965 season bikes, but at the same time some pre "F" bikes were still being exported.

The BSA year seasons usually started in August or September but sometimes the new season bikes were delayed (the worst case of delay probably being the 1971 season bikes)

Starting the season in August/September also allowed BSA to get the new season bikes in quantity to dealers in the all important USA market for the peak selling season which, over there, was in April May and June.

The "C" numberplate, if it was an original one not an age related plate, would relate to the date the bike was registered, not the date it left the factory. Some bikes remained in dealers stocks for some time after they left the factory before being sold(my own A10 left BSA in May 1961 but was not registered until March 1962)

I would suggest ask the maker of the ignition system for the information, only he will know what range is  built into your system.

Some digital electronic systems have a stabilising function where at low rpm to avoid engine stalling it advances the timing.

No sure if Electrex has this function built into the chip.

I think your parts are non standard hence the problem.

My recollection of my C11 from some years back is that the footrests are not welded to the hex bar, that each foot rest has a hex hole for the bar and the engine plates similarly have a hex hole so everything is held in place and secured by the nut at either end.

I presume the bob weights moved smoothly before the unit was fitted to the magneto?

If so then probably nothing wrong here.

The bridge plate is connected to the mag armature which apart from its own weight (about 700 grams) is under the influence of the magnetic field of the body  and friction from the points cam on the moving point heel, in the bearing, the oil seal and pickup brushes. The small weak springs cannot overcome this in the static position. They are all like this.

But when you kick it over you will see it return to the retarded position and when the engine is running it will advance and retard as designed.
