Twins / A10 dynamo belt drive
« on: 23 May, 2023, 10:19:18 »
Hi, got my dynamo sorted by APL Magnetos in Shaftsbury. Thanks for advice.
I have a belt drive that was supplied by Hawker Electrics some years ago. I believe he is no longer trading. Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of appropriate replacement belts? I want to replace the belt when I refit the dynamo.
Thanks, Rick.

Twins / Dynamo/ charging problems, A10
« on: 05 May, 2023, 16:09:32 »
I'm running a quite non-standard '59 A10 and it's stopped charging the battery. What's happened so far;
Was working fine but while I was sorting out a problem with rear light I found that the battery wasn't charging from the dynamo. It charges fine from a charger.
Checked the out put of E3L dynamo and it was showing about 1.6v.
Checked resistances, F---3 ohm, D---0.6 ohm. OK.
As the bike hadn't really been used for a few months I decided to "flash" the dynamo.
After the "flash" I tested the output again and now it's showing a NEGATIVE output of about -1.6v.
The dynamo was professionally rebuilt some years ago by Dave Lindsley but has only done about 2k miles in the last 7 years.
It's set up through a 6 - 12v conversion regulator, negative earth and driven by a "Hawker" geared up belt drive.
Help!!! How do I fix it???? Please give any answers in the simplest of terms!

Singles / Regulator cover
« on: 03 January, 2023, 14:29:41 »
Hi, I've lost the cover off my '46 C10 regulator box. It's the short older type. ( MCR 1 ) Does anyone have one knocking about in the spares box? Failing that, if anyone has one of the later type, (MCR 2 ) taller covers surplus to requirements, that would do as I could cut it down. If you can help, send me a message and we can arrange payment and postage. Cheers, Rick.

Singles / 1946 C10 Carb.
« on: 03 April, 2022, 17:39:29 »
Help with carb problem please. C10 Remote float bowl carb.
I can turn on the fuel tap and leave it for an hour or so and get no fuel leak.
When I tickle the carb prior to starting, before any fuel squirts out of the appropriate hole in the float bowl cap, fuel leaks from around the mixing chamber nut, out of the tiny breather hole above the thread that takes the mixing chamber nut and if I leave it long enough, out of the air intake as well.
If I leave it, it will continue to leak.
So at that point.....I turn off the fuel at the tank. The carb being flooded I then start the bike. Turn the fuel back on, the bike runs fine and the fuel stops leaking. I stop the engine, fuel still turned on at the tank.....no leak.
Turn the fuel off at the tank. All's fine until next time I come to start it.
There's no problem until I tickle the carb again.
I've got a bald patch from scratching my head. Any suggestions please? And don't tell me to protect my head with a cap!!!!

Singles / Altette Horn rebuild.
« on: 27 January, 2022, 11:53:02 »
Hi, The original Altette horn on my '46 C10 has stopped working. Can anyone recommend a repairer please. I've replaced the horn with a cheap modern one but as the bike is in "Barn Find" condition it's just wrong. Cheers, Rick.

Singles / 1946 C10, Voltage regulator cover.
« on: 14 December, 2021, 14:20:56 »
Hi, Has anyone got a spare Lucas regulator box COVER please. Got back from a ride only to find that mine had "jumped ship". I've managed to replace it with a taller one from a later model but would like to find one of the smaller original ones. Rusty is fine. Will match the patina of the bike.
If you have one to spare, email me at rick.robit@outlook.com to arrange payment, postage etc.
  Cheers, Rick.

Singles / C10 inner primary chain case.
« on: 21 June, 2021, 09:45:40 »
My 1946 C10 (pre alternator type) has the inner primary case with the "captive" sliding washer behind the clutch. The Washer has become worn and broken in places. I believe they are not replaceable. Questions:
Should the sliding washer rotate with the sprocket?
Is it the case that the sliding washer is non replaceable?
Is the inner case from a C11 with same "captive" sliding washer compatible with '46 C10?
Can a later inner primary case with the later and more common slider plate and felt washer be fitted to a '46 C10?
Looking forward to some info. Thanks, Rick.

Singles / C10 Staring problem when warm.
« on: 20 July, 2020, 15:31:37 »
Hi, 1946 C10. Runs well. Usually starts well. But when it's warm.......you can kick hell out of it and it wont start. Leave it for an hour or so and it starts, sometimes with difficulty????????? Leave it overnight and it starts with 1 - 3 kicks.
Do I prime the carb?    Yes.
Have I cleaned and gapped the plug? Yes.
Does the plug spark outside the cylinder when tested? Yes.
Do I have a heat resistant gasket between carb and cylinder? Yes.
When running, does it run smoothly? Yes.

The problem seems to happen mainly on very warm days. Any helpful suggestions please. And no, I don't want to carry a bucket of cold water around with me! Although, this morning, after my visit to the Doc's I would have happily drowned the damn thing. Went with a van to collect it a few hours later and after quite a bit of effort it started. Rode it home, stopped it, wouldn't re start!!!!!!!

Singles / C10 primary chaincase
« on: 25 October, 2019, 17:32:35 »
Hi, Info please. I'm trying to keep as much oil inside my primary chain case as I possibly can. My 1946 C10 has the primary case back plate with the simple sliding plate with no felt washer to encourage oil to stay in the case. If I can get hold of one, could I fit the B or M back plate with the more conventional sliding plate and felt washer?
At present, oil is filling up the primary case from the crank case as there is no oil seal originally around the crank shaft. I have found an appropriately sized oil seal that fits inn the recess currently filled by the plain sleeve that fits over the crankshaft where it enters the primary chain case. I intend to reduce the length of the sleeve by the width of the oil seal and fit the combination of oil seal and shortened sleeve. Thoughts please.
Cheers, Rick.

Singles / C10 Gearbox oil seal
« on: 19 October, 2019, 16:00:24 »
Hi, 1946 C10 3 spd box. Diagrams show a gearbox sprocket oil seal. From my experiences with A10 boxes, the oil seal is replaced from outside the box after removing the sprocket and that's what I expected with the C10.
On my C10 box there is no oil seal visible behind the sprocket. Is the oil seal fitted from the inside of the box or do I have an older type box that has no oil seal. I've got the box out and partially dismantled to replace a broken stud but don't want to dismantle it any further only to find that there's no oil seal to replace!!!!
Cheers, Rick.

Singles / C10 clutch removal
« on: 27 September, 2019, 19:09:15 »
1946 C10. How do I remove the clutch center from the gearbox output shaft please? Can't get a puller on it as there's no space between the back of the clutch centre and the circular sliding plate behind it.
Thanks, Rick.

« on: 14 September, 2019, 21:32:28 »
Come on guys......help! Posted a few weeks ago but no replies...... 1946 C10. How do I stop crankcase oil filling up my primary case. I mean like half a pint in 20/30 miles. Not taken the primary side off yet but it appears that oil seals weren't fitted until some years later. What can I do to solve the problem? HELP!
