Singles / B40 centre stand
« on: 13 April, 2018, 11:15:30 »
Finished rebuilding my B40 but left with a small problem.

The centre stand hits the silencer when taking the bike of the stand. I have put a bent long bolt with some thick rubber tube over it fixed to the cross member of the frame which the mudguard front fixes to, to act as a restrictor but not very happy with this.
I did notice the old original silencer had a dent underneath it ( not sure if caused by the stand or by a hammer).

Thinking about removing the stand and mig welding some blobs to the stand near the pivot to stop the stand retracting so far.
Is this acceptable? Any other suggestions appreciated.

Singles / Carb leaking!
« on: 28 March, 2018, 11:12:06 »
Just finished the complete rebuild of my 1961 B40.
Fired it up today for the first time since last July!
Now the snagging list starts:

New exhaust downpipe yellowed virtually immediately!

Oil leak from the oil feed pipes to the bottom of the engine.

Oil weep to one of the head feeds - new copper wshers to order.

Centre stand hitting silensor when taking the bike off the stand - bracket to make!

Biggest problem - leaking mononbloc. I did strip and clean the carb and fitted new gaskets etc but have got leaks from the bottom of the banjo intake; float chamber end, and from the main jet cover nut and the washer above!
Will remove the carb and bench test for leaks before refitting.
Never had problems with concentrics and cant remember problems in the past with monoblocs except for the float chamber end cap.
Any hints on curing the leaks? Can a smear of silicone gasket be used on the float end cap?
Any advice appreciated!

Has anyone used this company for parts?

Ordered an exhaust pipe a couple of weeks ago. No goods arrived and no emails answered or phone answered.Googled reviews and it doesnt look good.

They are based in Walsall, West Midlands.
I've got a couple of addresses - think I may pay them a visit..............

Singles / B40 oil feed

Can someone just confirm which way the oil pipes connect to the engine?
Is the outer pipe the return ie the pipes from the tank cross over?

Singles / Clutch cable routing
« on: 22 February, 2018, 10:31:43 »
Sorry to bother everyone with another small problem with my B40 rebuild.

What is the route of the clutch cable?
I cannot see what the best route for it is without fouling the chain or having to bend it through some very sharp bends.
I did see one B40 where someone had put a "P" clip on the engine rear mounting bolt to support the cable but that left a right angle bend into the engine case.

All advice appreciated!

Singles / B40 wiring advice and spacer advice
« on: 20 February, 2018, 17:37:36 »
I am in the process of putting my B40 (1961) back together. 2 questions I hope can be answered:

1. I cant remember the order of the electrical components that are fitted under the seat on the crossmember. Can anyone help? Also does the loom go under the frame tube or to one side of it?

2. I have a distance piece about 7/8 x 3/8 inch which I am sure came of one end of the swinging arm. I have fitted it to the left hand side so that it makes access to the bolt and grease nipple better. It looks like it should be there but my concerns are a) I cannot find reference to it in any parts diagram and b) the swinging arm bolt is only going into the swinging arm shaft by about 3/8 inch because of the spacer.
Should I leave it or take it out before I get any further with the rebuild?  I have looked at many pictures on the internet and enlarged them but cannot see for certain what is on the bike.

ps there is a spacer on the parts diagram 108  41-4055  Not sure what this is for. It could be the spacer I have

Singles / B40 swing arm - quick question
« on: 06 February, 2018, 18:38:04 »
Just had my seized swing arm sorted - only took 2 months but now bike is ready to reassemble. The swing arm pivot had to be pressed out and a new pivot fitted plus bearings in the arm.

I didn't make a note of the fittings at each end of the swing arm. I've got 2 bolts with grease nipples on, one longer than the other and also got a spacer. Can anyone let me know which side the longer bolt and spacer goes. Can't seem to find any drawings confirming the position!

Singles / B40 Brake return spring
« on: 15 January, 2018, 18:32:22 »
Is there a brake pedal return spring on the pivot of the rear brake pedal?
My bike hasn't got one and some drawings don't show one. I believe the C15 has a spring. I wondered if the B40 one (if it needs one) is the same?

Singles / shimming brake shoes
« on: 21 December, 2017, 17:39:08 »
I know this has been discussed before but there doesn't seem to be any "rules" about doing this.

The front brake lever is most effective at 90 degrees to the cable when operated. Sometimes it is difficult to compensate for wear by moving the operating lever to another position as the brake cam end is square shaped. Also the hub can also wear a little inside.
Oversize linings can be fitted but is it ok to fit shims over the ends of the shoes ( made out of tin cans ) to take up a bit of the space between the brake shoe and drum?

Singles / B40 Swinging arm and a few questions.
« on: 18 October, 2017, 09:19:34 »
New to this forum.
Recently bought a B40 ( 1961) which needed tidying. Came with a 12 month MOT so was usable.
However, I started dismantling with a view to repainting etc and everytime I remove something, a new problem arises.
At present the bike is just a frame with the engine in. I would appreciate a bit of advice on:

1. The swinging arm is solid - I cannot move it in the frame! I assume the pivot axle is seized. Any advice?
2. The battery box has virtually rotted away so will need rebuilding. Has anyone got a photo of what it should look like so I can get an idea of what to make?
3. How heavy is the engine  ? is it easy to lift out without any help?
4. Where is the best place for parts ?
