Sidecars / Tapers in fittings
« on: 09 May, 2018, 17:04:44 »
I am fitting a Steib S500 to my Ď53 plunger A10.
I have many fittings and a lathe to help with those I havenít.
I need to make the fittings which go into the lugs on the bike frame.
There are three of these, one under the head stock (tapered), one under the nose of the saddle (tapered, but a different size) and one just in front of the middle of the plunger (cylindrical and is also the pillion footrest mounting when solo). Does anyone have any idea of the internal dimensions of these lugs, particularly the tapers? I am finding it difficult to measure the tapers and the internal surface is uneven (paint I think, will need cleaning).
Any help gratefully received.

Twins / Plunger A10 crankshaft oil seal
« on: 30 March, 2018, 10:41:49 »
I have just had my crankshaft reground and new bearings fitted.
On the sprocket side of the crankshaft roller bearing was an oil seal, set into the crankcase/chain case wall.
I can't find it anywhere in the illustrated parts list or on Draganfly's diagrams. It is locked in by a number of centre pops.
Can anyone help me please? Is it some strange addition or have I got a later engine (BA10 5713) ?
I've just looked at the 1954 service sheet and it is present on that!
Anyway it was destroyed in removal and I need to source a new one.

Twins / Paint type
« on: 22 March, 2018, 17:05:43 »
I'm repainting my '53 plunger flash black (unusually it seems).
Never done much painting before. Can anyone advise on the best type of paint to use and what a modern equivalent of BSA /007 black enamel is please?
I've found plenty of advice online about Polychromatic Beige and Nutley Blue but information on black is hard to come by.
The RS paints database only works (fair enough) if you are buying the paint from them.
Is it feasible to apply a 2 pack paint or lacquer (aerosol) at home (in the workshop).
Any advice appreciated.

Twins / Plunger A10 nacelle instruments
« on: 19 March, 2018, 17:58:43 »
I have removed my headlamp nacelle for painting, but am having problems removing the ammeter and light switch. The speedo came off easily being a push fit in a rubber ring.
The ammeter is painted in so I canít see how it is fitted properly. There seem to be some tabs but I canít see if they are part of the nacelle or the ammeter.
The switch has me completely foxed, does it twist off in some way?
If the worst comes to the worst I can destroy them as they will have to be replaced anyway, but Iíd like  to get them off with as little damage as possible.
Any thoughts will be gratefully received.

Twins / Useful A10 valve info.
« on: 22 January, 2018, 15:25:32 »
You may all know about this already, but in case you didnít.
Iíve just bought new inlet and exhaust valves (53 plunger A10) and they appear to be the same size and arenít marked in any way☹️
Just found out how to tell them apart. The exhaust valves are Austenitic steel and non magnetic. The inlet valves are magnetic. Saved me a lot of trouble.

Twins / A10 Pistons again
« on: 04 January, 2018, 16:30:28 »
Sadly, I can't get away with using my existing (+060") pistons and now have to reline the barrels and get new pistons for my '53 Flash.
I realise that the lowest compression I can get is 7.25:1, but these mostly seem to be new Hepolite which I hear bad reports of (or at least the rings).
IMD are available complete with new liners, they say they are 5g lighter than the original, won't this mean I have to rebalance the crankshaft?
I would value any thoughts on good pistons and where to get them.
Thanks in advance,

Twins / Clutch Centre Nut
« on: 16 November, 2017, 16:26:28 »
I am having real problems removing the clutch centre nut on a 53 plunger A10.
Am I doing anything stupid? Iíve bent the tab washer back.
Itís not a left hand thread is it?

Twins / A10 Pistons
« on: 01 November, 2017, 14:38:26 »
Looking around the web, the lowest compression pistons I can find for the A10 (53 plunger) are 7.25:1. I believe the correct pistons for a GF are 6.5:1.
Does anyone have any comments about the advisability of using the higher compression pistons? They are flat, the lower compression ones are dished.
Any thoughts would be valued.

Twins / Plunger A10 Front Wheel
« on: 15 August, 2017, 20:16:42 »
I have just taken the wheel (what appears to be a normal 8" half width) off and there is a collection of 3 washers or spacers on the LHS, a single washer on the RHS and the spindle has no step in it.
This looks odd to me. Were there any like this or am I looking at a bodge?
I think my safest option is to get a new spindle and bearings and replace them. Everything else looks OK.
I'd appreciate any thoughts with thanks.

Twins / Plunger A10 pinch bolts
« on: 11 August, 2017, 09:54:19 »
I've just started working on my new (to me) '53 plunger A10, getting it ready for the road. I've found that instead of the lower rear plunger pinch bolts I have metric bolts with an odd collection of washers and spring washers. I was going to get replacement pinch bolts (with a flattened collar) but can't find any. Does anyone have the dimension (length, diameter, diameter and width of collar, and thread - I expect 26 tpi) to enable me to make them please?
I think I may have many more questions like this , as when I took the front wheel out a collection of 4 washers dropped out?!?  :)
Thanks in advance for any help.
