The Star and Garter / Re: Painting Barrels black
« on: 01 February, 2018, 15:47:12 »
Got the barrels back today, still masked up with heavy duty duct tape so the gun never hit the bores or gasket edges. I have sprayed it gloss black with Halfords home make VHT and it looks nice. I will check it over tomorrow and bake it in the oven. I will put the whole lot in a bath when it's finished and finally put an air line through the oilways. This guy did my frame for me and other bits.
He restores wheels and all aspects of metal polishing.  SS6 Rayleigh Essex. Recommended.

Twins / New Chrome Rear Mudguard Fitting. A65 OIF
« on: 31 January, 2018, 16:03:55 »
Decided to fit my brand new rear chrome mudguard today. Side by side on the garage floor they looked identical'ish. First job was to drill out the front welds and relocate and shorten the front bracket that fits to the rear of the down tube. The four number plate bracket holes were a good 15mm out. The two grab rail holes were 15mm out. One other top mounting was only 10 mm out.
The Lucas rear light bracket has three holes, these were all out by 15 mm. I drilled out all the offending holes and was very pleased that none of the old holes were visible when it was all put together. The quality of the mudguard was otherwise very good so I won't bother naming the shop. Thoroughly enjoyed the meaning of fettling today, looks really nice. I wish I could find a chrome front one, no one is producing these at the moment, only stainless  :'(

Apart from keeping the bottom of the engine clean, are these sump guards of real value. I have never seen one fitted to a bike ( Yet ).

Hi Phil and welcome. First of all I would buy a aerosol of carb cleaner. Those carbs have fine drillings in the body that spray primary fuel to the engine. Clean the carb as much as possible, every nut and bolt. Take photos with you phone to act as a reference. Spray shed loads down the two holes at the front face. A fine spray should come up at small drilling on the engine side of the needle. You can get a service kit from Ebay or Hitchcock M/C's. Adjust mixture screw as per book. Put Amal into Youtube search engine, lots of info and demo's on there. NO Smoking near the carb cleaner. If no joy come back here. Regards Colin

I think it is the rating re the number of posts, there should be Royal Nuisance next to mine  ;D

Thanks Julian. I can now see why I am not getting a reading, all seems well. I have spent the last hour looking at new switches, don't need one now. Have a nice weekend.

Twins / Lucas 169SA Handlebar Light Switches 1971-2 another question.
« on: 26 January, 2018, 15:21:12 »
Got most of the wires sorted on this dip switch. Horn works, flasher button ok. On a resistance test I cannot get anything on the BLUE wire which goes up to another switch ( 11 ) according to a wiring diagram in the Haynes Manual. I am testing from the WHITE inside the switch to all contacts. It would seem that the white is common live. Not my best subject ? Thanks. If anyone has a decent colour or a better diagram, please post it.

Can someone tell me what the Zener  Diode actually does. I assume it must be bolted to a good earth, this came with my basket case so please don't mock. This is what the forums are for. Can it be tested with my Avo meter.
Many thanks.

Funny you should say that, a guy on a Gold Flash brings a block of wood to the pub every Saturday lunch time in the summer. Always makes me smile, biker spirit. "Shepherd and Dog" Rochford, Essex.  Have a nice weekend.
