Twins / Another clutch issue on mates bike.
« on: 08 April, 2018, 16:04:00 »
I went to see my mates 500 today. He has fitted a complete new clutch with a 4 screw pressure plate, new plates and a new basket. Some plates are catching on the basket. I read somewhere ages ago about these pattern baskets being filed down with a fine file to cure this issue. Can someone remind me, thanks.

Twins / A65 OIF Clutch Advice
« on: 06 April, 2018, 16:31:54 »
My new clutch was fitted on the bench, new plates and correct springs and a spare pressure plate as the old one had a bodged adjusting nut. Today I fitted a new clutch cable NOS, The push rod does seem to be reaching the adjusting nut and the clutch has no travel whatsoever. I took off the pressure plate to access the push rod. it is exactly 11" long and is blued one end. The parts list states that it should be 11" & 1/16" long. ( 1/16"  :-\ ). Would this lack of travel prevent the clutch disengaging ?
To compound problems, the bike is on the stand and I am not getting any younger. I cannot get the Clutch Spring Nuts to start on the wobbly clutch spring bolts. In fact one now has a knacker thread.
Any top tips for getting these bolts on by a silly old sod sitting on the garage floor. At least it's not cold  :D

Twins / A65 Rear Footrests.
« on: 03 April, 2018, 17:06:37 »
Got a brand new pair today. The bolt that goes through frame has a 30 mm shoulder before the thread starts. Should there be a large spacer somewhere ? There was no footrest on the frame when I bought it. Overall the bolt is 45 mm long. Thanks.

Bantam / D7 Restoration
« on: 01 April, 2018, 15:10:16 »
I have been offered a D7 in running order for £750. Not bad. It will need restoring but I am worried about the cost. I have spent a fortune on a 650 I have nearly finished. I will get some money back if I sold it. However if I were to fit new rims, tyres and a respray the Bantam will it be worth the effort. I only buy these bikes to rescue them but don't want to bang my head on a brick wall. You lads must have some good advice on the section, thanks.

The Star and Garter / Where shall I get my exhaust system ?
« on: 30 March, 2018, 17:37:44 »
My restoration has moved on. All finished apart from fitting the new engine and some wiring. Need a complete system for a 1971 OIF Thunderbolt with balance pipe. I want some Dunstall style silencers. There used to be horror stories about some companies. Thanks.

Twins / A65 OIF Front footrests.
« on: 18 March, 2018, 16:13:56 »
I have acquired a pair of NOS chrome front footrests with correct nuts and bolts and they fit perfect. They come with two spacers that are about 1/4" thick. They can only fit on the inside before the nut goes on as these footrests have locating pins to match the frame. I cannot see what their purpose is ? . No sign of these spacers on the parts list or could they be for a triple. ? Thanks.

Twins / No Hooter.
« on: 16 March, 2018, 15:40:47 »
Started sorting out the ancillaries on my rebuild. Found the hooter in a box of bits and put it straight across a charged 12 volt battery, not a squeak ! Is it time to throw it away, bog standard 1971 A65.

Twins / Rare grommet OIF A65
« on: 28 February, 2018, 17:50:09 »
These late BSA side panels bolt on to the air box assembly. These bolts were covered by a black grommet on the outer side of the cover. Looked everywhere, Dragonfly don't even show them on the parts list. Nothing like it for sale on ebay. A part number would be a start. Many thanks.  :(

Twins / Tank Chrome Trim.
« on: 22 February, 2018, 16:58:19 »
I have a four gallon Bread Bin tank, just got two new trims for the front and back of the centre of the tank. Under the tank is two slots which the flat ends of the trim slot into front and back. Do I then cut the centre ends of the trim to fit under the chrome Beading Holder. Is it that simple or am I ? Be gentle please.

Twins / Headset bearing adjustment.
« on: 16 February, 2018, 17:15:40 »
I started with a bare frame, new abutment rings, new bearings fitted and new stanchions. I have fitted the fork legs and front wheel. The problem I have is the final adjustment on the new setup. It is all too heavy to feel the adjustment. Worried about over-tightening.  Any tips please. 1971 A65.

Twins / Which Boyer for 1971 A65 OIF
« on: 10 February, 2018, 12:00:01 »
Decided on a Boyer Conversion but which one. I want to retain my 12 volt coils. There are several for BSA twins on the market from £94 to £134. I emailed a well known dealer asking this question, their young lady just sent me the fitting instructions.  :-\. I just want a bolt on with no need to buy other bits. The Mark 4 00052 seems to fit the bill. Thanks.

The Star and Garter / Dunstall Exhausts
« on: 06 February, 2018, 17:24:53 »
I am trying to decide which exhausts to put on my late A65. I like the look of the Dunstalls and they have-had a good name. I don't want too LOUD, any views welcome; thanks.

Twins / New Chrome Rear Mudguard Fitting. A65 OIF
« on: 31 January, 2018, 16:03:55 »
Decided to fit my brand new rear chrome mudguard today. Side by side on the garage floor they looked identical'ish. First job was to drill out the front welds and relocate and shorten the front bracket that fits to the rear of the down tube. The four number plate bracket holes were a good 15mm out. The two grab rail holes were 15mm out. One other top mounting was only 10 mm out.
The Lucas rear light bracket has three holes, these were all out by 15 mm. I drilled out all the offending holes and was very pleased that none of the old holes were visible when it was all put together. The quality of the mudguard was otherwise very good so I won't bother naming the shop. Thoroughly enjoyed the meaning of fettling today, looks really nice. I wish I could find a chrome front one, no one is producing these at the moment, only stainless  :'(
