The Star and Garter / Shooting Star
« on: 15 October, 2017, 15:05:15 »
About ten years ago I became aware of a nice shooting star in one of my neighbours garages. There are enough spares including a rebuilt engine and gearbox to build a second bike. He died a couple of years ago and his wife is now considering selling as a job lot. I may be the point of contact one day in the future when this lot is advertised. I have sold quite a few bikes on ebay and other sites, but this is quite a big parcel. What would be the best way to dispose of this lot. It is in Essex.

The Star and Garter / How to resize photos for forum posting.
« on: 12 October, 2017, 15:34:31 »
I have inserted my memory card in my windows computer and downloaded the pictures. My pictures are too big to post. Someone suggested Paint Shop which I have found 'Open with Paint Shop' which I did, went to resize. It offers Pixels or other, tried both still no joy. What am I doing wrong please.

Twins / 1971-72 Thunderbolt Petrol Tank Identification.
« on: 09 October, 2017, 17:13:14 »
The tank that came with my one owner A65 seems to be the correct fit but cannot find an identical one anywhere. It looks like a T140V tank but mine has a single seem on top from front to back and an offset petrol cap ( Similar to Mark 1  Rocket 3 ) , the T140 has no top seem. A chrome trim runs from front to back but the tank has no holes for any tank badges or knee pads. I have taken it back to bare metal and there is no threads for any other fixings. Does this seem like a US model or what have I got here. It came out of the factory 'green'. There is no colour mentioned on the V5. Thanks.

Trying to locate a rubber gaiter or spring that goes between the two brake arms on the front brake. Unable to locate or find the part number so far. Thanks.

Twins / Stand Springs Woe.
« on: 14 September, 2017, 15:06:32 »
My newly painted frame is ready to come together with the newly painted side and centre stand. I have two brand new springs as well. Not looking forward to fitting these, there must be a wealth of experience out there and any tips would be greatly appreciated. The engine is not in so I can lay it down on a nice off cut of carpet. Help please.

Twins / A65 Wiring again
« on: 03 September, 2017, 15:03:49 »
Can someone post a colour wiring diagram of the OIF Thunderbolt on here or direct me to one via a link. I am building my bike from scratch, frame upwards. Thanks.

The Star and Garter / Kursall Klassics in Southend
« on: 29 August, 2017, 17:16:59 »
Visited this classic bike shop today for the first time today. The owner Martin was very helpful, he sorted me out some very good secondhand spares for my A65. Old school expert at old school prices.
Even come away with a new Dunlop Roadmaster for 50. Credit where it's due.

Twins / Sealed wheel bearings ?
« on: 22 August, 2017, 13:25:04 »
I am rebuilding my wheels including the bearings. Most bearings on the market are now sealed !! I am used to adding loads of new grease when I change these, do we still have to apply liberal amounts and do we still fit the dust covers and grease retainers if we use sealed units. Thanks.

Twins / A65 Speedo ring removal
« on: 15 August, 2017, 14:48:21 »
I cannot get the speedo ring out of the hub, appreciate that it is a LH thread. No much leverage as the hub is out of the wheel. Has anyone had any success in this department as I want to change the bearing that is behind it. Or will it drive right through the hub and out the nearside... Thanks.

Twins / A65 OIF Wheel rebuilding 1972 Conical Hubs.
« on: 13 August, 2017, 15:46:11 »
I stripped my standard rims off the hubs without measuring the offset distance between the brake plate and the rim. To the best of my knowledge I should have put a straight edge across the brake plate and measured between the straight edge and the rim. I need the measurements of both wheels I think ? Can anyone help please. Last time this happened I made an expensive mistake because the wheel builder did not ask for this measurement. Thanks.

Twins / Steering lock removal 1972 Thunderbolt
« on: 09 August, 2017, 11:43:46 »
Just restoring the fork yokes, the top one is fitted with a chrome faced steering lock. Need to get it out as I don't have the key. I suspect there is a sheer off bolt. Any good advice will speed up the ongoing work, thanks.

Twins / Another tank question.
« on: 07 August, 2017, 17:36:48 »
My 1972 OIF Thunderbolt has the right shape tank, but unlike every other one I have seen. It only has one thin chrome trim from front to back. It also has a round trim at point of fixing which joins the trim. It came out of the factory green. Could it be a Bonnie Tank or similar. The bike was made in late 1971 and registered 1972. Thanks.

Twins / Scruffy Conical Hubs
« on: 05 August, 2017, 16:55:33 »
I want to tidy up the hubs before the new rims and S/S spokes go on. I am not building a show bike. The back hub seems to have come out of the factory painted black and the front is bare
aluminium. I have thought about blasting and powder coating, I am open to constructive advice from the members. Many thanks.

Twins / Newbie from Southend area
« on: 31 July, 2017, 16:35:14 »
New to Forum. Just acquired a basket case 1972 oil in frame Thunderbolt, full restoration required. Will need lots of help from Forum members. Sent off for a V5 and fingers crossed. It arrived today in boxes and bags. Had to get the window cleaner to help me get the engine out of the van ( heavy ). Booked the frame in for powder coat and will start pricing up wheel rebuilds, tyres etc or good second hand. I have restored a 1954 A10 which went to a good home.
Had a quick look at engine, the pistons are original with 43,000 miles, the rings a slapping about on the piston. Will need someone local to rebore and supply pistons please. I attend the bike meet most Saturdays at the Shepherd and Dog, Brays Lane near Rochford, Essex. If anyone has any parts that are in good condition please let me know. I understand that most of the bits from the oil in frame Triumph fit. Have cash can travel a bit. Thanks for reading my first thread.
