I do seem to remember some years ago when I restored my A65 from a basket case that I fitted the rear mudguard and wheel then had to remove them to fit the oil tank.

I am insured through Peter James and have 2 bikes a 1963 A65 and a 1956 A7 both with agreed valuation unlimited mileage legal cover  breakdown cover fully comprehensive and for both bikes I paid 89.39 for one year I have been unable to find a better quote. I did breakdown once and rang their help number, the AA came out and got me running again they came out in about 40 minutes but apologised for the delay as they were stuck in roadworks.

That number would indicate a 1961 engine. 1961 engines began DA10R-3001. 1962 engines began DA10R-5958 the HC does stand for high compression. You can check this out for yourself on the homepage for this site just click machine dating and follow the links.

If you have no documents for your M20 then it would seem that your best route would be to go for an age related plate I suggest that you go to the home page on this site and click on machine dating then click on age related plate that will tell you how to go about getting an age related plate. I believe the fee for age related is 55 but reclaiming original registration is still free but if you have not got the relevant documents then that route is not available to you.

The main problem with Mascot 910 is he does not have a V5c he only has the buff log book so his bike will no longer be on the DVLA records. So the bike will have to be reregistered and part of the process is it will have to be roadworthy if you already have a V5c for a bike then it is on the DVLA records and even if it has not been on the road for some time it can be easily taxed and will if applicable be MOT exempt.  I have been through this process of not having a V5c but a buff log book I mistakenly thought that the DVLA had all records but when I rang them up I was told that they only have records for vehicles with a V5c. Any vehicle that did not change from the old buff log books to the new  V5 back in the early1980's. At that time the vehicle records were held by the local authority but when these were transferred to the DVLA you had to apply for a new V5 which later became the V5c.
 As regards sending your Buff log book to the DVLA I would also be reluctant to send it by post when I did my new registration which was 6 years ago the local DVLA offices were still open they advised not to send it by post but what they did was to photocopy it and stamp the photocopy with an official stamp, sadly they said because of possible fraud you are not allowed to photocopy any documents yourself. I would ring the DVLA and find out what their proceedures are now they may have some way of allowing your log book to be photocopied.

Even though it is MOT exempt because it has been off the road for such a long time before you can reclaim the registration with a new V5c as well as a dating certificate it has to be roadworthy so you will have to get temporary insurance then an MOT which will in the first instance  be given on the frame number then if the DVLA accepts your documents they will issue you with an MOT with the new registration. Also you will have to apply for MOT exemption I think the form is V112.

I have been doing some more reading on this  and there was an update in Dec 2017 which states that if a vehicle is now currently exempt from an MOT because it is pre 1960 and has has been substantialy altered, if those alterations were carried out more than 30 years ago then it is still MOT exempt but if those alterations were done in the last 30 years even though at present it is exempt then from May it will require an MOT. Now as I said earlier what is substantial also as indicated in the Star article is fitting a sidecar less than 30 years ago going to be classed as a substantial change. In addition every time you tax your vehicle you will have to declare it MOT exempt and the way I read it you can only claim exemption when you tax the vehicle. MY current bikes are a 1956 A7 MOT exempt a 1963 A65 currently needing an MOT the Tax expires 30 April. MOT expires May 16th. So if I tax it from  the beginning May I cannot apply for Tax exemption until May 2019 or I could keep it off the road for all of May the apply for Tax and MOT exemption from June 2018. I think I will tax from May and get another MOT when the current one expires on 16th May.

This thing about the new MOT rules is getting more confusing as time goes by the BSA owners club recently printed an article in the Star magazine. Avehicle that has been substantially changed is not entitled to exemption even if it is over 40 years old but only if this change took place within the previous 30 years (after 1988). Sadly the DVLA has not as yet defined what substantial means.Here is a copy of the article. I do not think that your bike Straw Bear would have any problem with exemption.

Here are 2 photos of the set up on my early A65. I had to make my own version of the tickler as when I restored my A65 I could not find a supplier for the parts this may have changed now. It is not an ideal situation as when tickling the carb prior to start up you cannot see when the carb is flooding due to the design of the panels, I tend to hold the lever down for about 8 seconds then try to start it, most times it does but if after a few kicks if it does not then I hold the lever down for an extra 3 seconds and then it always starts.

That does clarify  the paypal process and I agree with the previous post about cash on collection or delivery after inspection, I have sold a bike on ebay and bought a bike on ebay and in both cases it was cash on collection after inspection in my opinion it is the only safe way to carry out these type of transactions and if a seller did not agree to to it I would back off. Even with a reputable dealer no money would be spent until the bike had been seen and inspected but I suspect any reputable dealer would agree to that.

I have 2 bikes insured with Peter James an A7 and A65 fully comp with breakdown cover for 89.39 if you want agreed valuation they will send out a form for you to fill in and providing the valuation is under 5000 they will do it with 2 photographs one either side of the bike.

Yes that is very similar to mine, same place just a different fixing bracket it is not really noticeable unless you look for it if I painted the filter canister black it would be even less obvious.

As I said earlier it is in an awkward place to photograph from the side as other things get in the way but I think you will find that the frame has 2 brackets just above the stand with holes already drilled and I just made a U shaped bracket to mount the filter fitting to.
