The Star and Garter / Tip for cutting pipe
12 February, 2018, 16:46:25
 :)

Just thought this might be of interest. I find it a good way to get a square cut on pipe.
Just mark the pipe, put a jubilee clip around it and cut upto the clip. Before you do the clip up tight turn it around a couple of times to make sure its as square as possible. May not be 100% perfect but better than I can do "freehand".
I find that a fine 24tpi blade does the cleanest cut, without scraping away the side of the clip.

The Star and Garter / Sloper engine overall
23 January, 2018, 19:17:44
Hi  :)

Looking for someone to "do" a Sloper engine. Initially to strip and advise then eventually to possibly carry out the restoration work??? Its seriously poorly so a fair amount of engineering is probable.

Traveling is not a problem but would prefer south of London and in the West Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex area.

So anyone you know with a good sound reputation would be good news.

The Star and Garter / Hepolite pistons
07 December, 2017, 10:45:11
 :)

Hi. My son bought a pair of "Hepolite" pistons for an A65 project. The engineer doing the rebore said that they are not genuine Hepolite.

He contacted the seller and was told that Hepolite was bought out by another company but that his new ones were indeed genuine.

So any ideas on this?????????

Advice or comments much appreciated.

Singles / M20/M21 block
28 November, 2017, 18:45:19
 :)

Just a thought. Do the M20 and M21 have identical cylinders. The reason that I'm asking is because my book says that the carb bore is different, that of course makes sense, and I am wondering about whether there is a difference in the inlet orifice.

Twins / Front fork counter bore
07 November, 2017, 11:09:05
 :)

Hi all.
Having just read all the threads about the fork sliders, I called a couple of guys I know and the upshot is that none of us know what the term "counter bore" actually means.

Its something maybe that has never been of any concern to me because all I've ever done is dismantle forks and put em back the same way.

So, being a bear of very small brain, would someone, or two, care to enlighten us?? With simple words of course.

Your advice much appreciated.

Twins / A65 drive sprocket
29 October, 2017, 20:15:06
Hi.

I'm considering putting a 29 tooth primary drive sprocket on an A65 that I'm building. All my current info is for 28 teeth.

So whilst I understand the gearing affect. will be a problem with the primary chain. I can only find A65 info for an 80link chain

(which I imagine will be too tight) or an 82 link.

So if I use the 82 will I have enough adjustment. Your advice please.

Incidently the reason for this is quite simple----I already have a 29T sprocket.

Don't know what it came off???????

The Star and Garter / Fuel Tanks (again)
25 October, 2017, 09:21:57
 :)
Hi. I'm just in the process of "doing" a petrol tank and I've run out of cleanser and sealant.

Whats new on the market and what are you gents currently using. I'd much rather use something proven by you than take a chance on getting it right.

Singles / A65 pistons
12 October, 2017, 12:04:15
Hi :)

I have seen listed some 7:1 pistons and as I need a set of pistons I am giving this some thought. Mainly because it should be easier to kick it over.(If I ever get to trying it again)

What were they in originally??

What sort of effect would they have. Radically underpowered or only a little????????

Twins / A65 Cylinder head
06 October, 2017, 10:22:05
Hi Julian 8)

At the risk of boring everyone else rigid I still don't know which cylinder head I've got. The casting no does not appear to be recognised by any of the "dealers". So what alterations were made and when. All I know is that at some stage the Valves were changed. That infers that the seats were also changed.

Do you reckon that I can check this out simply by measuring the seat diameter or what else might you suggest.

What were the valve changes and was the head casting actually changed in any way.

Your help and advice appreciated.

Twins / A65 Camshaft
30 September, 2017, 11:08:41
 :) :) :) :)
Good morning. I am rebuilding an A65 engine to Thunderbolt spec. I have a camshaft No 68-0473 which I am lead to believe is high lift???. Out of a Spitfire or something of that ilk.(According to Draganfly,-----I don't know) If I remember rightly the correct one is 67-356??

I know the dear old Thunderbolt with standard pistons etc doesn't need that amount of breath, so what will be the probable effect if I use it
I suspect very little but I would be interested in your thoughts.

Twins / A65 Cylinder Head
25 September, 2017, 15:16:55
Hi.

I have purchased an A65 Cylinder Head minus the inlet manifold and my thoughts are that the A50 and A65 are probably different

I am confused about this because although the A50 carb bores are different I cant find a definitive answer about the manifolds.
In one book they appear to be the same, another book says they are different and a further book doesn't even mention them.

So any light on this one would really be appreciated. I would also like to hear from any one who has one or has a cream crackered head they might part with

Twins / Oil Pumps
20 August, 2017, 09:41:08
 :)
Will the "drive end" of an A50/A65 fit and work with the "pump end" of the earlier A7/10 B31/32 etc. It would appear that they should go together OK but your advice would be very welcome.

Twins / A65 Pistons
17 August, 2017, 13:57:28
 :)

Greetings.

I have just bought a set of A65 barrells and pistons.

The pistons are Stamped on top  68-793 BSA.            46   6/66   L

They are also marked by the gudgeon pin hole  68-743.

I cant find anything that relates to these No's in any of my lists or on Draganfly. (In fact Draganfly says that 68-793 is a dowell)

So what have I got??? any help or advice greatly appreciated

 :)

Just thought I would waste every body's time, with a quick hint.

Freeing stuck valves and heads so you don't need a hammer.

Tools req:- Plug spanner and about 4' of about 5/16th diameter non hairy nylon cord.

Method:- remove plug/s, rock bike in gear until the piston/s are about halfway up on compression stroke, feed the cord into the bore (keep at least 1 foot in hand) now rock the bike forward and the bunch of rope will either A. push your valve back into place, or B. will push head off depending which you are trying to do. You will probably still have to locate your pushrod unless you are seriously lucky.

Does it work:-  Yep never failed for me and that includes extreme use on a Cessna aircraft engine and pushing the rusted head off an ancient Fordson Major tractor.
