The Star and Garter / Last mistake
16 December, 2022, 13:51:30
 :) :) :)

I hope ths is the last cockup of the year.

Just re fitted swinging arm tp ongoing BSA A65 Cross tube fitted nice and tight. no slack in the bushes. Fitted shocks, fitted rear sprocket. Oh deary deary me, Chain is still dangling down i havent threaded the arm through the chain loop. So split the chain etc. Not the first time I've done this but seriously hope its the last.

However its that time of year: so here is a seasonal wish to you all that you may be merry and bright and have a healthy and fulfilling New Year

The Star and Garter / Zinc Plating
12 December, 2022, 13:55:07
 :) :) :) :)

I have just read and reread the 'piece' in the Star documenting the plating process. Very good and very informative and well up on my scale of things to. Overall very worthwhile read--thanks and congrats.

In fact the reversal of the de rusting process and it looks as easy.

The power source is different As I use a 12v battery charger, however this can easily be shut down to 6v. For de rusting I immerse in a mixture of water and common kitchen soda: would that work in this reverse format.

I shall look for a gold ring or something similar and give it a go, tho in truth I dont know what I would plate. So if you see someone with a recently missing finger---guess

Hi this is a general question.

What is the difference between Schrader valves and Presta valves. My main interest is in the diameter of the stem.

The Star and Garter / Simple tip
15 October, 2022, 23:00:52
 :) :) :) :)

Hi gents. I'm calling this a tip simply cos its something that has served me well. Of course it may also be in general use anyway.

Just got your lovely bright frame and bits back from repainting or just finished doing it. First thing I do is fit the two stands whilst the frame is light and there is nothing in your way and you can put it up on a bench or the kitchen table (if you do it on W,I night). I now use a length of nylon cord and a turnbuckle to stretch the spring. Then lay the engine on the bench and put the frame onto the engine---or just the bottom half.

Makes life awfully easy.

Twins / A50 /A65 Swing arms
24 September, 2022, 12:42:17
 :) :) :) :)

Hi I have two swinging arms. One is 1/2" wider in the "jaws" than the other. There is no apparent damage. So what have I got. I guess one is correct A65 and the other isn't. I cant find an answer on any of the parts lists that I have checked. This is harking back to my chain not running true. Its running true now but I'm still not satisfied with my set up.

Conundrum ----again

The Star and Garter / Conce
20 September, 2022, 21:38:03
 :) :) :) :) :)

I have a concentric carb which (I was going to bin it) was very bunged up but in otherwise apparently good nick. In order to get it really clean it was necessary to remove the small 3/8" cover---the small steel? plate very much like a core plug in the main casting over the float chamber.

This removal of course made the carb unusable and, certanly the sealing plug, not reusable.

There are several awys that I could accomplish the resealing but I am now seeking advice from anyone who has gone down this line, Specifically I would like to source a 3/8"dished core plug. (A cupped plug is no good cos insufficient depth to fit one) or 10mm that I could work down to size. (strangely 5/16" is readily availably")

So your help or advice please

The Star and Garter / Wrong threads
11 September, 2022, 10:37:37
 :) :) :) :)

Happy Sunday Morning

The other day it came up about rethreading 26 CEI/26BSF. I have since spoken to a metallurgist (Clever guy) If you either re-tap or re-thread the difference being 5Degrees angle. You either: - Carve away approx 6% of the thread metal or bend the thread approx the same 5Degrees in either direction. Thus stressing the thread base. Expert opinion----don't do it, especially for anything important.

Twins / A65 fuel tanks
10 September, 2022, 21:36:46
 :) :) :) :)

Hi guys, I am considering fitting the later OIF tank onto a 1964 bike. Two bikes in progress but only one tank of correct age. Doing it wont be a serious problem but I would appreciate any input from someone who's "done that".

Twins / A65 Clutch springs
10 September, 2022, 12:59:58
 :) :) :) :)

Hi
I am reliably infrmed that A65 4 spring clutch, the spring length should be 39mm or whatever that is in old money. Its my experience that its not possible to get such for A50/65. Mostly market availability is 42/43mm That is 3-4mm (1/8) too long.

I reckon that when the Unit models were introduced they would have used A7/A10 clutch springs. How long are available A7/10 springs da da 39mm.Very easy to fit. When I built my A50 I used A10 springs---Lovely clutch action and no problems with slippage etc. I have just put the clutch onto A65 ----work in progress-----and have agen used A10 springs. ==39mm readily available, or were.

In truth obviously I don't know, but I think its a pretty safe bet that those were the ones originally fitted. Beesa management scrimping etc.

Just reassembling A65 4spring clutch and am finding "stiffness" in a couple of the nuts so I want to run a tap through them.  I guess they are 1/4 BSC but not sure. Would someone like to confirm that please. Thank you.

Twins / A65 Brake plate
30 August, 2022, 19:54:16
 :) :) :) :)

Hi gents

I'm looking for an early--1964---A65 rear brake plate 7"?? Whilst I'm still trying to find one, do anyone know of an interchangeable one. There are so many that look the same, so I'm asking just on the off chance.

Take care

Which BSA do you ride? / A50 Trike
28 August, 2022, 16:51:49
 :) :) :)

This is a 1962 built A50 first reg Feb 1963 Converted three years ago. Never been really used that much. Now has a Virago 535cc front end(Not shown) Because it has to be MOT'd and dear ol Beesa front brake couldn't cope. Independant rear Suspension with custom differential, VW brake discs, fully hydraulic braking front and rear. Electric hand brake. Yep cost a lot. But I cant ride a bike now.

Hope the pics come out.

Twins / A65 chain
27 August, 2022, 22:18:58
 :) :) :) :)

The situation is. I am doing an A65 rebuild. I Have it mostly together and have just come back to it after about a year :) Engine is in, electrics mostly done and wheels fitted.

My problem is the chain, visibly, does not run true and in fact touches the casing on the return (lower) run. The frame is as true as I can measure and the engine fits fine, all the through bolts and and plates are a good fit so I dont see that being a problem. The Swinging arm does not show any sign of damage. I already have the longer Half spindle fitted so I can't reasonably move the wheel further to the right to line the chain up.

Question is have I got completely the wrong Swinging arm. My model has the brake drum on the right opposite side to the chain. Was the difference between what I have and the Quick Release arm so radically different. Or do I have an arm off a completely different model. A7/10 for instance. I cant remember what they were like  Because the arm fits at its pivot perfectly I dont suspect any damage at that point.

So, once again, your advice is sought. Just for once lord let it be something simple. But I suspect its the wrong arm.

Twins / Engine breather
15 August, 2022, 16:25:21
 :) :) :) :)

Hi. My engine breather is almost pouring oil.(I didn't do the assembly) but I wouldn't Be surprised if there timed breather is assembled wrongly. As I dont have the time etc to pull the engine to bits I am considering putting a breather on the crankcase as shown by the spot in the pic then passing a pipe back direct to the oil tank (after blocking off the existing breather) however not necessarily from that exact point

The Star and Garter / Engine derivations?
01 August, 2022, 21:24:01
 :) :) :) :)

Hi This just may not be the place to put this but I thought it may be of some minor interest.

Picking up from some of the previous comments regarding the Rotax motor being used in OUR new Gold Star, lets go to basics.

All piston engines are derivations of Otto Daimler's first 4 stroke engine. and when it comes to derivations the mind boggles. I started browsing and got lost within a very short time.

RR Merlin--V12 27litre engine, derivant of 1927 BMW V12 27litre engine. 65% + were made by Packard in the USofA. RR Meteor engine. Same format but downrated, Manufactured by Rover Never anywhere near a Rolls factory.

Villiers, lovely little engines in their day, so many of them being used for so many different jobs, they were almost a pandemic. However were they DKW derivants.???

Much later Rover 820D powered by an italian Marine engine which in itself may well have been an Isuzu base. Heaven only knows how many Isuzu diesels have other Companies names cast into them. I THINK the Australian Military re engined its entire L/Rover fleet with Isuzu's.

I guess with this sort of engine history the use of the Rotax aint really that unusual. Trust you aren't totally bored and hope someone will pick up on this and see where it leads us. There are bound to be some interesting facts on this line tucked away somewhere.
