Picking up on the point of welding mild steel to cast. I had a conrod end come through the side of a vintage tarctor engine and I gas welded a mild steel patch on. As far as I know its still going strong. But you have to use cast filler rods as I said for a good job I use old piston rings.

Hi
I have done this myself and did a complete M20 head repair. It took forever but was quite satisfactory. I used old piston rings because thats about the best cast that I can get hold of. I used Oxy/acet.I put picks on here at the time. I'll try to find them now and repost

I dont know if its the same now but I understand one of the manufacturers only Batch tested about one in a 10000. that meant there could be a 100 bad ones out to market before a problem was picked up

Hi. I have a pair of used Std low comp pistons about 5thou worn. If you are reboring/relining you could have your bores done to size. Just a thought.

Pre War / sloper rebuilder wanted
18 April, 2024, 20:00:30
 :) :) :)

Greetings
My son has an unfinished Sloper that he is finding it impossible to finish because of other commitments. Therefore he is looking for someone with Sloper experience to do the job for him. All of the major engineering is done both ends, rebore, piston has been respun to original sizw and shape etc and the engine is rebuilt and in the frame. Not sure about the gearbox but I think so. Mag done etc  Frame and wheels etc all sorted, but a fair bit wants doing. Small parts are perhaps missing.

This is possibly an ideal project for someone who would like to do a rebuild but doesnt have the time or the money to buy one. Obviously he is going to pay all the costs.

Bike is currently at Haywatrds Heath but that is not a problem.

Anyone interested would like to PM me and I'll set up communication with him. Distance is not a problem

1962 I got about £7.00 per week. But I think then you could tax for 3 or 4 months at a time. So I could afford it most of the time. I seem to recall that I taxed for 3 months then missed a month then repeated. I must have been seriously younger. I think I had a 350 Ariel

Hi.

Without doubt first step---Get the BSA dating Certificate. That will tell you if the vehicle has ever been exported therefore whether you need a NOVA Cert(Easy to get :), theres lots of previous advice on this site.

To obtain the dating cert you will need to contact the dating officer. He will send to you a questionaire. Fill in said and return it with ALL the requested info and relevant pics.

Dating Officer will send you a dating cert, the relevant DVLA form, and a fools guide to filling in the form. Do EXACTLY what the guide says and send it to DVLA.

If you do it around easter when the world is full of miracles it may go through first time, Probably before they finally issue your registration, they will want the bike inspected. In general terms this is just for the serial No's to be verified and recorded. You will ????? hopefully receive a V5 within a week or so.

There are lots of possible anomallies and downright screw ups in the process. I seriously believe it depends on the experience and diligence of whomsoever's desk it lands on. For me--easiest WDM20 boxabits, straight through. Most difficult---Rebuilt A65 properly imported with NOVA from HMRC. DVLA wanted the original South African veh docs. But even then only a quick sensible letter to explain the situation was sufficient. Yes its a b--l ache at the time.

As for type, I rely on the forum dating notes and if they say my frame No was a Thunderbolt, thats what I call it for insurance etc.

I now religeously use a totque wrench. I'm not sure why this is so as for many many years I never knew they existed. I dont recall ever having a problem.

I use a very similar method. except.I put the washer firmly in place then put a jubilee clip on the shaft to hold the washer in place. Then use the cord. Wear a glove because the cord can bite. remove the clip--job done. NORMALLY its a two minute job.

One of the problems as I see it is that we dont appear to be able to contact Wassell direct. The only recourse is to go through the daelers and that is a bit hit and miss. I bought a concentric which was simply junk and the dealer has never really accepted responsibility. So I went to Amal. At the time about £50 more expensive. Tenner a year over 5 years etc. So to me its defo become the way to go. Of course it helps that I can just pop in to Amal and speak over the counter. Enjoy.

I am now down to one unfinished A65(I'm not going to get it finished) then thats me. But I shall continue to read here and enjoy your journeys with you.
