There were similaer problems with some pattern A10 kickstarts. I seem to recall the cotter pin holes were not to original spec. My solution was to buy another one from a different supplier. This fitted nice and securely to the kickstart shaft but hit the silencer >:(
Next time I'll go for a tatty OE one and fork out for refurbing.

Let us know which shows you decide to show it at.

Originality is good but have you ever considered improving it. I notice for example they had not finished the job and left the tyres unsectioned.

Sidecars / A bit in the side
« on: 13 April, 2017, 19:48:34 »
I can't recall why but some time ago I decided I would fit a sidecar to the Sloper. So I found a period chassis and braked wheel locally and sorted out the fittings. Boxing day 2015 I got bored so started building a body. I had alreday decided on a replica BSA Model 7 as I only needed a single seater.

Only then did I think about gearing down the engine to cope with the extra load. I was a bit of a twit really not to make sure I could sort this before all the effort to on the chair. The Sloper owners' handbook is very helpful in explaning how to set up a sidecar and the engine gearing options. But could I find an engine sprocket for a 29 Sloper...not  a chance. I even visited a local gear manufacturer who offered to have a go at making one. 150 if it worked, no charge of it didn't, whcih is decent of him but an expensive way of getting a sprocket especially as I would be guessing at the size to go for.

Then as it happens I obtained an M20 engine sprocket this week (it came with the bits of an almost entire bike) so I thought I'd might as well try my luck and see how close a fit is was on the Sloper. Its fits!!!!! So, I have an 18 tooth sprocket on order as I type (19 plus postage). Oh happy man ;D

Only trouble is that when I fit the sidecar I have no space left to store it, which is probaly why its taken me nearly three years to get the job done >:(
Another begging letter in the local newsletter asking for storage space will be appearing soon.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I've drained and refilled the gearbox. Did not find anything in the old oil and no bits fell out ;) :)

I'll see how it goes but it hasn't returned since the initial few yards so probably just a dry mainshaft.
Not to self....use the bike more often!

How frustrating. Hang in there mate. I've been there plenty of times and one day as you are enjoying the ride this will be a distant memory.
Sorry if these are obvious but are you sure you are not getting a spark? I thought mine had packed up and it was just that the spark was such a light colour I could not see it in daylight! Secondly, remember that Boyer does need a good battery voltage. Check that it hasn't dropped while you've been testing etc.

Go for it. I found it makes starting easier and gives a more reliable tickover and no points to maintain.

I have Boyer on one A10 and use a Motobat battery as they really hold a charge over long periods standing.

Checked and oil level was a bit low. I forgot the layshaft sat lower in the box so its unlikely that this was dry.
Julian, I'll follow up your suggestion and drain the box and see if anything untoward emerges.
Noise has not returned so  maybe the mainshaft was just a bit dry from standing.

Lack of lubrication makes sense.
I am wondering of this could lead to the bush rotating. In which case the lubrication hole will not longer line up with the oil hole in the casing. I guess its a 'box strip down to check GRRRRRRR.

Twins / Gearbox squeal!
« on: 07 April, 2017, 09:05:38 »
I  took the Super Rocket out yesterday for its MOT. As I pulled away there was a loud squeal from the gearbox (in gear and clutch engaged, ie driving). I recall it did similar last time I had her out in November. She tends to stand around most of the year waiting to be used. The squeal goes after a few seconds but might re-appear once or twice in the first few hundred yards and then clear

I am thinking bush spinning? Time to get the gearbox out and stripped.

Any thoughts?

(this will teach me to call her the bike that's all sorted and just for using!)
