Twins / Re: Frame number not matching logbook
« on: 16 July, 2018, 22:25:29 »
Just because a stamped number look like a factory job, is doesn't mean to say it is. I strongly suspect that the frame has been stamped to match a log book that someone has got hold of.

Twins / Re: Super Rocket ignition timing

See my previous advice regarding timing and present day petrol. Pinking will happen with a hot engine because the engine is hot... Pinking is pre-ignition of the petrol and that happens more easily in a hot engine than a cold one. Have you ever experienced running-on with an engine where it continues to run despite ignition being turned off? Same thing. Detonation is somewhat different. That is explosive burning of the fuel/air mixture instead of a controlled burn. It quickly destroys pistons.

It's quite simple really. You point the bike at the shed wall and switch the headlight on. Rev the engine and the headlight brightens. Drop the revs to tickover and it dulls a bit. No ammeter needed.

Twins / Re: Gold Flash Ignition Leads

Once I set the ignition timing, I select which lead goes where. Sometimes if it won't start, I have to swap the leads. So is there a right way and a wrong way?

Singles / Re: What oil to use in forks?
« on: 29 May, 2018, 14:13:09 »
I use tractor universal 10W-30. Although it's an engine oil, it's also a hydraulic oil. It's great for primary chaincases too and it's cheap.

It's back to the iron head. The only alloy head which will fit your bike is a twin carb one - rare as hens teeth.

Armours do come in for a lot of criticism yet I have only had one issue many years ago - a B31 pipe which touched the ground when fitted. They were a bit skeptical but did give a replacement which did fit.  All my bikes have Armours systems and they ain't bad.

Devon Rims will supply the correct spokes. See eBay, they are listed on there. I am pretty sure there is no offset front or back.

Is a 6v dynamo the ideal charging setup for electronic ignition? A magneto overhaul will last 25 years +. I would suggest just biting the bullet and getting the mag fixed.

Tell us more about the fuselages in the background.

Busy once again. There were some exotic BSAs to be seen as well as the odd everyday workhorse. Spot the oil drips - this one was ridden to and from the show

I still get my exhausts from Armours. They're fine.

Singles / Re: Tyre levers: how big ? How many ?
« on: 07 March, 2018, 06:44:08 »
You really should not have to use long levers. If you do, you are getting it wrong. My bike toolkits hold 2 6" levers which are perfectly adequate using the right technique. I do possess longer levers, but they are only used for changing tractor tyres.

When I took the sidecar off the Gold Flash, the front tyre in particular had plenty of tread left on it. The handling for the next few hundred miles was interesting, to say the least.

Twins / Re: What spark plug caps? (And plugs)
« on: 04 February, 2018, 17:57:49 »
I use NGK non-resistor plug caps and NGK B7ES plugs. THe Green Spark Plug co is an excellent source of all things ignition. Beware cheap NGK plugs - there are counterfeits out there.
