Singles / Re: How many rings in an M20 piston
« on: 25 April, 2017, 10:05:33 »
All M20s have four grooves in the piston, the top groove is left blank & does not need a ring in it, I think this was a thing by BSAs when they developed the 500 & 600 side valve left this as a sort of oil clearing groove, just make sure you have the rings the correct way up.

Chris.
Welcome back. I am a little confused as to why you would want to change the original set up on your B31, just send your mag & dynamo off to Tony Cooper in Halesowen telephone number 01615592405 for refurbishment and they will be like new again, you could change the lighting to LED from Dynamo Conversions Ltd, Pete will put you right there.

I have never experience any problem with Armour silencers, although, there have been one or two negative reports on their products just recently, Feked are supposed to be very good quality although I have never dealt with them  yet.

If you want more speed from a small bike buy a jap bike, stop wasting your time and effort trying to get more out of something which was not designed for speed, no matter what you do to, it it's still a C15.

Calvin.
You should not have any problem, if as you say you fitted new loom and there should be no need to fit a Boyer Bransden kit, Have you checked the coil to make sure your getting power to  it on the switch side and the contact breaker side, also to make sure you have the correct gap on the points and that you have the timing? after checking all this, I would make sure your not 180 degrees out with the distributor.

Don't forget you will need three wheels to achieve this :) :)

Do you have an unsupressed plug cap on the bike? it should be for a magneto, I know sucking eggs etc but sometimes new leads are fitted with caps attached also check you have the correct plug and not a supressed one.
I have a B33 and if I flood it, I have to wait some time before it starts, yet if I just turn the petrol on, without flooding it will start okay.

Thanks Bess & JulianS,

I have the two lights, Ignition also oil pressure, oil light goes off but ignition stays on, I thought this was most peculiar as most other marques of bikes, the warning light goes off.

On the 1963 A65 should the ignition warning light, stay illuminated when the bike is running, or should it go out?

Todays enquiry: Is there anyone supplying new worm drives for the C15 oil pump distributor shafts, it fits onto the crank shaft, my mate needs a new one, as there is quite a lot of play in his and we have checked the drive shaft and that appears to be okay but he has about an 1/8" play when shaft is in in place.
 Thanks TTJohn

About one and a quarter turns out, then adjust as necessary after starting up.

Twins / Lack of adjustment on carb air screw
« on: 17 March, 2017, 10:14:10 »
I have had quite a problem with the A65L, now, I know it should have a monobloc carb on it as its a 63 model, however, it was fitted with a 930 concentric when I got the bike so I thought I'd leave that on there, I can run the bike on choke, when I take the choke off it cuts out, the mixture screw does not seem to have any effect at all, although I have cleaned out the pilot jet which ids the sealed type and blew it through with an air line, I have just raised the needle to the middle slot which I believe seemed to have  improved it slightly, the book states the needle should be in the first groove, now I'm thinking maybe I should try the third groove, what do the team think? :-\
