another vote for ebay.
being able to view what your buying is better than the description we used to have to rely on.

the engine spec is very impressive but i guess emission controls have damped it down to the 50bhp mark.

hi nigel,
what is the oil return flow to the oil tank like when cold and when hot?
if your oil pickup is blocked then check the pick up pipe with ball free and whether the oil pump gasket is blocking the return hole. lots of other possibilities as well.

hi rob, reading your original post you are using old amal carbs you have had cleaned but you still need to physically check the pilot bush isnt blocked. plenty of posts about blocked pilot jets.
if ok cross that one of the list.

a bit of a wild guess, but have you checked for good compression at tdc. i ve had a a10 that had the exhaust and inlet pushrod mixed up on one cylinder and that wouldnt start whatever i tried.
check your pushrod lengths a nd that the valves compress when you turn over the engine to tdc. valves should be closed at tdc .

hi , nothing to lose by winding the springs out. as long as the starter turns the engine that would be near the mark.
the clutch springs may be too stiff . i have fitted standard gpz500 clutch springs before which were progressive and that bike has an electric start.

hi allen
i ve used gpz500 clutch springs in a 3 spring with surprisingly good results as their springs are good quality .
electric start triumphs and nortons used a ballast resister and six volt coils to aid cold morning ignition starts with a lower than 12 volt supply while the starter motor draws most of the amps from the battery at the same time.
i wonder whether any modern kit would run into cold morning non starts draining the battery too quick.

what type of clutch comes with the kit , multiplate or diaphram?
a norton diaphram clutch could offer the best clutch settup but whatever type the grabbing is due to a over strong spring or springs is it not?
does the ark kit use a ballast resister to feed 6 volt coils like the commando?

fit the outer cups  all the way home, then see how much of the inside of the steering head casting has to be relieved for the races to make contact with the bearing outer with suitable  clearance. when happy fit inners to yokes.
you probably will need a dremel.

starting easy doesnt sound like poor compression. poor compression usually means hard to start. check the valve clearances and engine timing is correct.

the engine dying issue with electronic ignition is a common symptom of a loose wire, particularly the ignition earth wire which i would check first, 12 volt feed to igniton and pick up wires are all suspects.
any swarth on top of thee piston will most likely pass through the exhaust valve into the exhaust.

i have had a similar problem on my thunderbolt with a new wassel carb.
choke and tick over o k ish but jerky pulling away unless choke on. i raised the needle 2 notches from standard settings but now a lot better.

i ve read synthetic oil is the best form of oil protection on running surfaces but the customer is always right. in my experience if straight oils do not get hot enough it caN build up sludge in the bottom of the oil tank.
