The Star and Garter / Re: One in Four...

Thanks Dean, so the claim that One in Four... is likely based on the 1934 season production total.

Thanks for that Dean, that's an earlier date for that slogan than I had imagined. Any idea what year your poster is?
Agreed, BSA had many more overseas markets pre war, the empire/colonies and also all of Eastern Europe, the Baltic states etc which bought nothing once Russia took over.

The Star and Garter / One in Four...

Just about everybody here will probably be familiar with the BSA publicity slogan "One In Four is a BSA".
Two questions relating to it -
When was it first used (I have 1952 in mind but I'm not sure)?
Exactly what production figures was that statement based on?
Or is it just another unsubstantiated legend...?

Pre War / Re: B24 parts
« on: 22 February, 2024, 19:20:53 »
Parts do come up occasionally, an oil tank and a cylinder head were on a well known auction site until very recently, just keep an eye out.
The B24/25/26 cylinder head is the same for all three models, but for the three years of production,37-39 there were changes to it for each year, although these are nothing to prevent earlier or later heads being fitted. From 1938 two extra lugs connecting to the rockerbox were added. For 1939 a completely new casting with deeper finning was used. Can't think of a head from a different model which would go straight on.
The oil tank was the same for 37/38 but changed for 1939 to the M series shape tank, which I believe would fit the '39 B models as the mounting points are the same.
Forks were specific to B series. M series girders would probably go on but C series both pre and post war types will go straight on and are dimensionally pretty much the same.
Both C and M models share quite a few parts with the pre war B series.

Later casing with steel bush to suit the 3/4" kickstart is the easy answer. Not enough metal in the 5/8" outer cover to make it easy to modify.

When the kickstart is in its "at rest" position the kickstart pawl is pushed inwards and out of engagement with the ratchet steps (inside the gear) by the stop plate which is attached to the inner cover. Hence there should be no clicking noise unless the kickstart is pushed down with the engine running.

Singles / Re: 1959 C15 Factory Colours - Turquoise?
« on: 30 January, 2024, 20:33:39 »
The Bike in the pic is Metallic Almond Green, BSA number 100, modern paint match Volkeswagen Zendergren Metallic K6Y.
The brighter shade of green used for the first part of the 1959 season was Polychromatic Green, BSA 133, superceeded by (I.e. same as) Polychromatic Zircon Green BSA 141, modern match Mitsubishi G53.

Two different shades of green were used, firstly Zircon Green (same as the Sunbeam Scooter) which was replaced by metallic Almond Green.
Modern paint matches for both are listed in Rupert Ratio Vol2.

Singles / Re: BSA B40WD Rear Shock Lower Bushes
« on: 19 January, 2024, 18:43:40 »
The original Girling 1/2" bore bushes are very difficult to find these days. Best bet is probably to go back to the supplier of your new shocks and get the correct 1/2" bore bushes to suit them, they are usually available with a range of bushes or sleeves so they can be fitted to a range of bikes.

Agreed Julian, it should be a half nut.
The washer is also incorrect, instead there should be a pressed steel cup washer which is made from steel about 0.5mm thick. Fitting that would also make a bit more thread available.

Hi Bill, I can probably help, PM me if interested.

That type of star shaped adjuster seems to have been used by BSA on their cables around 1967-68.
The aluminium lever bracket I have a distant memory is a genuine Amal part and was standard fitment on Mk2 or 3 Spitfire? But I could be wrong on that. I think that some aftermarket copies of that design of lever/bracket have also been available, to suit the star shaped cable adjuster.
To replace your broken cable like for like, try Johnsons cables or trawl the internet for original BSA cables of that type.
Or -
- slot both adjuster and threaded ferrule to remove them from the cable so they could be fitted onto a replacement cable
- fit the more common type of handlebar lever which accepts cables with either the star shaped adjuster or the round knurled adjuster.

Singles / Re: B40 Mk1 WD gear box upgrade
« on: 18 December, 2023, 17:44:12 »
B24/44/50 "Victor" gearbox is a straight swap.
Another (hard to find) alternative is a C15G gearbox.
In each case you keep the B40 military top gear pinions and shafts and just swap 1st/2nd/3rd gear pinions.
Alternatively if you want some off road capability but no huge gap between 3rd and top you can fit C15G 3rd gear instead of the B40 military 3rd.
If you need gears I can probably help.
PM me if interested.
Rupert.

Singles / Re: More B40 woes … small end too small!
« on: 21 November, 2023, 19:08:40 »
You may have a C15 conrod, same 41-234 number. Whats the width of the small end? If it is narrower than the length of the B40 small end bush that would confirm C15. If so you need to check you have B40 flywheels as they are bigger than C15...
