Twins / A10 electronic tacho's are they any good
« on: 13 March, 2018, 10:16:42 »
I am thinking about an electronic tacho (smiths style) for may A10, does anyone have experiences with them.
I am running a BTH mag.

I put a Boyer on my T140v about 10 years ago, best thing I have done it is still going strong.

Also on another note, my bike was not charging, the dynamo was lighting up a 12 volt bulb so I though it may be the regulator, so Draganfly sent me a modern day equivalent, a tiny module, once again fitted in minutes and now she is charging....50 job done ! hopefully it will never need touching again.

Modern day "modifications" certainly have their place.

Mods - Perhaps we can have a section called modern day modifications.

Twins / BTH magneto fitted to my A10

As some of you know I have been having some real magneto dilemma's. There is an intermittent fault with my K2F which may be a quick fix but the waiting list for the specialists to do the job is up to 6 months and by that time summer is over.

Breaking down when you were 25 was fun but now it's a pain, so my way of thinking is chuck money at it until it stops becoming a pain and spend the time enjoying riding it, knowing there is a pretty good chance you will get home.

In this modern world, we want everything yesterday and waiting is becoming a rude word.

I contacted the guys at BTH magnetos in Milton Keynes, they make a new mag from scratch with a modern electronic ignition inside, they are a bit....well al lot pricey for the unit and coils, but they were on the shelf. So I drove up to them and collected it, and it was fitted the same day.

Fitting was a doddle, I had to buy a new non advance retard timing gear from Draganfly (45), I made a small coil bracket and fitted the coils under the battery box, timing was so easy using the timing pin supplied.
Another good idea is the new mag has elongated mounting holes so you can slightly adjust the timing when running, by rotating the mag.

All I can say is they are an awesome piece of kit if you have the budget- All my A10 can say is thud, thud, thud, thud, thud, it has never ticked over so smoothly.

I have gone down the BTH route, a lot of money but I feel worth it if it's trouble free.

I have a 59 A10 and had some sparking issues, stripped the mag down and cleaned it and the spark was good and ran well. Now the problem is back so I have decided to get a Magneto overall done.
I have been ringing around all afternoon trying to get someone to do the job, I have had all kinds of answers, such as - we are not taking work on - 6 months wait - closed for the summer - It's like a bloody secret society.
Then I'm told by a few not to trust the cowboys they will ruin your mag...  It's driving me mad, surely there's someone out there who can just say...send it in we will fix it with no problem, instead of all these drama's, no wonder the British motorcycle industry went down the pan.

Rant over feeling much better now  ;D

Here is a great tip regarding brushes :
If you can draw on some paper with them and they draw well (like a pencil would ) then they are cheap copies and not fit for purpose.
If they will not draw and feel scratchy on the paper, then they are OK.

If you have used the cheap ones then you will need to clean the slip ring as it will be contaminated.

Can anyone recommend someone who can service my K2F MAG, tried Dave Lindsley but cant get hold of him.

Many thanks

Can anyone help, my A10 is registered Jan 1960, I have talked with DVLA and they say I need to prove it was manufactured before 1960 to be MOT exempt.

No just a bling A10, not sure whether to keep it or sell it, It's been in storage for so long it may be time for someone else to enjoy it.

Just saying Hi to everyone, I have owned my A10 for 30 years, it's been in storage for the last 17 years. Some new oil after cleaning out all the sludge traps and a glug of fuel and it went second kick.
Registered Jan 1960 - Do I need tax and MOT ?
