I'm afraid the 20/50 does everything for me including gearbox and forks!

Have you tried Priory Magnetos. Run by an A10 enthusiast who also supplies other parts.
Not had a mag done yet but has given excellent service on parts I have bought.
If you stick it into Google you'll find the contact details.

Took me about 6 or 7 weeks to get a dating letter for my A65.
I think he has a lot to do and it is all done voluntarily.

Which BSA do you ride? / My rides
« on: 21 April, 2017, 00:07:31 »
I have an A10 in black from 1960. This was restored when I bought it. Enjoyable but very heavy for me to get onto the stand now.

An A65 Star from 1962 which was part restored when I bought it. Now with forks completely done and new head bearings and new loom wired up plus multiple other 'adjustments' too many to list. Matching engine and frame as came out of BSA and original retailers name-plate still on back mud guard. Goes like stink and I love it. A privilege to ride.

And an A50 now in black from 1967. Looked odd in red when I had it with a spitfire tank and two into one. Rides well enough but can be a bit disappointing if I've had a day when I've taken the other two out then get on the A50. Feels like swimming against the tide.

Bought a 2016 Triumph Street Twin last September to undertake some longer distances with a little less fettling involved.

But give me the BSA's every time. I love them and tolerate the Triumph.

All three of my bikes (A10,50,65) have the Norton type filters fitted which use clips for attaching the pipes. I couldn't get jubilee clips to tighten without slipping so got some clips which rely on two nuts with a bolt to tighten. Not sure what they are called, like jubilee but much better.

I use the Morris Classic 20/50 in all three bikes with the Champion H101 filter in the return. The Morris is used for the gearbox as well, rightly or wrongly? Even filled the forks with it when I did the front forks and head bearing on the Star over the Winter.

Thank you for these replies.

I only do about 750 miles a year on each of my BSA's and the oil and external filters are changed before putting them to bed for the darker months.
Seems the consensus is to keep riding unless there are any unusual sounds coming from the engine. One benefit of having three bikes is that it is possible to compare between them.
The A65 Star is my favourite and probably gets a bit more riding and care than the A10 and A50.
Thanks again.

Twins / Engine tear down
« on: 21 March, 2017, 23:08:11 »
I have an early 1962 A65 Star (amongst others) and have owned it for about 2 years. It has very good oil return, does not wet sump and, for its age, goes pretty well on the road, in fact good in third and fourth gears.
I fitted an external oil filter when I first got the bike.
Over the Winter I took oil pipes, oil tank off and cleaned thoroughly. There was quite a lot of sludge in the oil tank.
I don't have history on the bike but it is the original engine as per the BSA records.
What do people think about checking of the sludge trap, big ends, crank,, etc. for a bike which runs OK? What are the criteria that would make someone decide to have a tear down and rebuild of the engine? or is it leave well enough alone?
Thanks

The Star and Garter / Re: Dating certificates & DVLA applications
« on: 21 March, 2017, 22:50:56 »
When I was waiting to hear about my dating letter from BSAOC I sent an email via the contact us on the main BSAOC site. This was after I had waited about three weeks and I was worried my letter of application might have not reached its destination.
The reply was that it can take 6 to 8 weeks for the dating officer to sort out these applications because, as you said, they are all volunteers and have limited time to devote to the process.
Mine came back at about six weeks after sending.
As I was not in a hurry anyway this was not a problem for me.

That took about 5 weeks to come back.

I had a problem with my '62 A65 electrics which I tried to fix by tracing faults. Never actually got to the bottom of it. Just got fed up of breaking down.
Bought a new complete loom from a person on E bay who makes bike looms up and labels all wires ready to go on the bike.
I found it much easier to rip all of the old wires out and start from scratch.

PTFE tape can also work if you haven't got suitable washers.
