Singles / C15 charging system

Got my C15 up and running but not sure it’s charging properly. When I got it the stator had green, white and orange wires so looks like it had been rewired at some time. These were wired into the loom so I chased back to find what colour they connected to on the loom and connected up the same when rebuilding. With the engine running and either no lights or side lights the ammeter just moves into positive when revved slightly. However when I switch the dip/main beam on it goes to between 6 and 8 discharge I understood that the charging is boosted by the 5th and 6th coils in the stator kicking in when dip and main come on so the battery doesn’t discharge.
I’ve checked the wiring via the ignition and light switches and it looks like the circuits are right. I’ve tried swapping the alternator wires around but can’t find a combination that boosts when on main. I did find one that charged at 4 amps positive with no lights on but this would presumably cook the battery. Any one got any thoughts as I’m relatively clueless on electrics other than following wiring diagrams.
