Twins / Clutch Issue after engine rebuild. A65 3 Spring
« on: 16 June, 2018, 14:57:55 »
My clutch has been too stiff since my engine rebuild. I put new friction pads in, new push rod, new cam thrust ball bearings and lubricated the new cable. Tried all sorts of adjustments and the cable is not cable tied anywhere. I pulled the clutch out today, the plain clutch plates slightly warped-worn. But the outer basket has ridges in each section. I assume that the plates are catching on these ridges causing the problem. A wise mate of mine said to file them all straight again ? I am of the mind to get a new basket or a complete modern clutch assembly, views please. Thanks.

Bantam / Exhaust Sizes
« on: 08 June, 2018, 17:42:53 »
I have been looking at adverts for exhausts for Bantams. The adverts talk about small bore ? I have a 1963 D7, what size would it have if it was standard. Thanks.

Twins / Amal on Thunderbolt.

I have a brand new concentric on my single carb A65 OIF. Running weak, needs choke on to pull. Which notch should the carb needle be on please.

The Star and Garter / Another registration question.
« on: 05 June, 2018, 16:29:55 »
I collect my D7 tomorrow and will insure it straight away. If I take the new style V5 and complete Section 6 New Keeper, will the DVLA Post Office be able to deal with immediate road tax ( free ) and MOT Exempt and send the V5 off to register it in my name ? OR will I have to register the bike by post first. Thanks.

Twins / Is it charging A65
« on: 01 June, 2018, 17:27:23 »
Had my first ride today on the rebuild, engine fine. Clutch dragging. I have fitted a new Motobatt 11.OAH Battery. How can I tell if the Zener Diode, the solid state rectifier and alternator are all functioning as they should. My new brakes are crap  ;D

Twins / My restoration started today, yippee.
« on: 28 May, 2018, 15:46:08 »
This morning I completed the wiring on the Boyer and Dual Spark Coil. Grounded both plugs and got a really good spark. Filled up the fuel tank, tickled the new Amal and kicked it over. Had a strange noise from the head area, it sounded like a dogs squeaky toy expelling. This would seem to be the rocker cover gasket not sealing, this acted like a reed and caused the squeak as the back pressure built up inside the rocker cover. Anyway the old girl fired up and sounded really strong, very good oil return. Just needs fine tuning I hope. No smoke or rattles. Not bad as it has not run in around ten years. Just need to sort out the mysterious rocker cover stud problems which is subject of another ongoing thread. Thanks for all the wise advice of late. Colin.

Hopefully I will be a bigger pest on the Bantam D7 section in a few weeks

Twins / 72 Rocker Cover Studs A65
« on: 27 May, 2018, 16:14:18 »
This restoration is still fighting back. The four outside studs holding on the rocker cover are causing problems. I ordered a set of four studs from a well known BSA spares shop. These studs have a course thread one end and fine the other. The fine thread will wind into the head but are very sloppy. The coarse thread will wind in a bit, but feels like it will split the casting if force is applied. The first company described one of the threads as cycle thread ? I thought these bikes were UNF ?
I ordered another set of studs from another well known company and have exactly the same problem, in fact exactly the same studs. If I knew which thread was in the head I would be tempted to just  put four bolts on the rocker cover to hold it down. Can anyone help, two famous BSA shops can't. Thank you.

Twins / New Lucas Rewire, on a lighter note.
« on: 23 May, 2018, 16:23:12 »
Stuck an old Bandit battery on the OIF 1972. So far  ;D New Lucas Loom. New handlebar switches left and right, New flasher unit. New Lucas Ignition Switch.

Ignition on,
I have an oil warning light, I also have a front and back parking light. Fitted a new Lucas flasher unit and I also have indicators working fine, when they flash the front parking pilot light also flashes.
Brake lights OK. I have power to Boyer.

Ignition and lights on.
Rear light OK, pilot OK, no headlights, brake lights both ok. Power to Boyer.

I am working from the BSA A65 ( 1971-1972 ) wiring diagram. G21

I found this too small to concentrate on with my old eyes, fortunately my daughter has blown up the diagram on a good copier. Which makes life easier.

Questions. Should parking lights be on all the time with ignition on ? What does switch listed as 11 actually do please, it is shown as being connected to a blue wire which goes to switch 15.

Electrics obviously not me strongest point. Thanks.

Twins / Rear brake issue.
« on: 13 May, 2018, 17:50:10 »
I fitted my newly built back wheel and fitted the brake pedal. Despite having loads of meat on the shoes I am taking up nearly all the adjustment on the brake road. The parts list shows 2 caps
ref 41-6078 on the 1971 Version of the Thunderbolt. I did dismantle the brake plate when I had it aqua-blasted, BUT I cannot remember if the shoes were fitted with the caps when I assembled the hub. Do they make that much difference ? Thanks.

Twins / 1971 Firebird Sump Guard ?
« on: 11 May, 2018, 16:44:14 »
During my restoration of my box of bits A65 Thunderbolt, I was on ebay every day buying anything that fitted. I purchased a NOS sump guard because it was the right price and it is shown on Draganfly's parts list. It did not fit as the lower engine mount was about 2" out from the two rear lugs.

I have just seen an identical second hand sump guard on ebay listed for the OIF A65 for 79.99 by Vale Onslow Motorcycles. I sent them a message just to clear up the issue. They did not reply but have removed the listing.

I started looking at Firebird pictures on advert and some look like the lower engine mounting lug is further back. It could be the angle that the pictures were taken but the frame is possibly different on the scrambler ?

I revisited Dragonfly's parts list and the guard 83-3136 is no longer available but is listed as being only for the Firebird OIF.

I did a google search and British Bike Bits Parts list a sump guard 83-3136G that will fit a standard OIF A65. It is nothing like the ebay one I saw and nothing like mine.

If the Firebird frame is different someone could come unstuck if they buy a second hand frame for a rebuild of a standard OIF. If it is the same frame, Vale Onslow and myself have sump guards that don't fit. Can anyone clear this up please.

The Star and Garter / Dealer near Hereford Andy Gregory ?
« on: 03 May, 2018, 17:38:30 »
Does anyone know this guy that advertises on the web, Andy Gregory Triumph Parts. I have never seen any adverts for him and don't want to part with my money till verified. No offence meant.

Thank you.

Twins / Cable Routing A65 OIF.
« on: 02 May, 2018, 16:58:53 »
My Thunderbolt is rewired, new cables all round. I have looked at many pretty photos of this model and wonder where all these cables are hiding. Behind the head-stock are many wires from the two handlebar switches, headlamp loom and main loom. Squeezed in there is a hooter, a choke and throttle cable, clutch cable and a breather pipe. Is there a definitive plan or has anyone got some decent photos of the section with the tank off. I have seen many variations of the front brake cable routing, the right way can only be the right way. Likewise speedo and rev-counter correct routing please. Appreciate the help.

The Star and Garter / Stolen Bike
« on: 30 April, 2018, 18:18:43 »
Below has been lifted from another well known forum.

I have just discovered that my trusty old A10 that I have had for the past 50 years has been removed from my shed without my consent and I am a wee bit upset. Its reg no was KBJ 203 but no doubt that will be removed. It was taken from Holt Norfolk so if you hear of one doing the rounds please let me know. It looks like the photos except a bit older, dustier and rustier. Any help to get the old beast back would be greatly appreciated.

Twins / Which Fuel ?
« on: 28 April, 2018, 16:59:20 »
It is getting close to that time that I hope to fire up my A65 total restoration, bought the engine oil today and will fit all the new oil pipes tomorrow. I will put half a pint of oil down the push rod tubes and hand crank it over to get it circulating. It crossed my mind that I have not considered what fuel or lead supplements I should use. Although my engine is low mileage I don't want to spoil all the hard work and money I have thrown at it. I ran my A10 on basic green fuel till I sold it and never had any short term problems. Any advice would be useful, thanks.

Twins / Thunderbolt Exhaust Brackets. OIF
« on: 19 April, 2018, 15:56:52 »
Just got my complete balanced exhaust system from Armours. All lines up very nice so far. There are lugs on the down pipes which are designed to take a chrome bracket to the top front engine mount. When I got the bike there were no exhaust pipes with it. Armours do not do the said bracket. They suggested looking at the Triumph Bonnie OIF bracket 70-6857. I was hoping someone else had come across this set-back/problem. the gap from lug to engine mount is about 3 1/2". The Triumph chrome brackets are cheap but I don't want to start drilling and cutting as it won't look nice. As normal any help would be appreciated.
