Twins / Advance timing mark?
« on: 20 April, 2018, 21:57:03 »
A very basic question for most, so apologies! I'm putting a Wassell electronic ignition on my A65.
To get it roughly on, I need to get it at full advance.

I've got the timing cover off, I've identified the mark on the rotor. I'm either not understanding our I'm getting mixed messages.

There are some reference points on the case in the timing window. Screw holes at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. There are also 2 holes close together at about 5 o'clock, one of which has a pointer.
From what I've read, to have the engine at the full advance point I don't actually want to line the rotor mark up with the pointer, but with the 6 o'clock screw hole. Is that right? Or is it pointer all the way?

Thanks, Dan.

Twins / Battery cradle
« on: 15 April, 2018, 15:05:56 »
Hello all, a bit of an odd one - the battery cradle on my '71 lightning is suspended by rubber bushes. Does anyone know if this is for vibration ONLY or, is there a reason to not have it connected to the frame electrically.
I'm attaching the side panels with brackets attached to the cradle, they're plastic at the mo, but is there anything stopping me from using aluminium and therefore taking the cradle to ground (I'm mounting the coils in the side panels, so the panel itself will be earthed)

Twins / '71 A65 lightning running rough
« on: 05 March, 2018, 20:07:52 »
Hello all,
Following my previous posts, the A65 is starting pretty well, 3-4 kicks regardless of the weather :)
However it's running pretty badly on light throttle openings. I ultrasonically cleaned the carbs, took it out for a test run and thought I'd cured it, then after a mile or two the stutter came back. :(

Before the carb rebuild the right plug was a bit sooty so I'm going to try leaning out the idle mixture on that carb. It starts and runs well when accelerating but at a cruise at less than 1/4 throttle it just feels like a cylinder is missing a beat every few seconds.
Any other ideas about what to look at?
Thanks, Dan

Twins / Headlight bulb lighting
« on: 19 February, 2018, 21:32:03 »
Hello all, I'm working on a wiring diagram for my A65, I'll be converting to negative earth and a few other things. When it comes to the headlight filaments, do you know if it's:
Dipped beam OR Main beam
Dipped beam AND Main beam
I'm looking at the '72 wiring diagram someone put up on here, but that has the 4 position key switch and my '71 has the 2 position key and a separate lighting switch on the headlamp shell.

I'd be happy to put the diagram* up if anyone's interested. In fact, I'd appreciate the feedback before I go ahead.
* Diagram is a VERY generous term. I've been hacking about on power point.

Twins / 71 A65L without standard airbox
« on: 17 February, 2018, 16:05:33 »
Hello all, my bike has never had the standard airbox, I was wondering what alternative intake options there were and folks opinions on them. I guess my main options are cone pod filters, velocity stacks or 60s style pancake filters?
Thanks, Dan

Twins / What spark plug caps? (And plugs)
« on: 04 February, 2018, 17:53:22 »
Hello all,
I rode to my local café today! Woo!
I had a terrible misfire at steady throttle, I'll be investigating the carbs of course.
However, the plug caps were also loose as hell, so I've decided to treat it to a pair of plug caps that aren't 47 years old. Should I be using a resistor or non resistor (suppressed/non-supressed?) type?
If it matters, I may be changing to electronic ignition in the next year or so.

Also, what plugs are people using? I'm using NGK 8ES.

When it was on song my God it flew! It also seems to be starting better now. When warm it was first kick - in front of an audience, no less!

Twins / Possibly silly carb ticking question
« on: 02 February, 2018, 16:48:07 »
I have a pair of Amal MK1 carbs on my lightning, at the moment with no airbox so I can see the back of the carb when I take the pod filters off.
When I tickle them, I get some petrol coming out of the drilling on what looks like part of the pilot circuit (and of course at the tickler, which is to be expected), is that normal? Should the carb really flood that much that I get a little splash out the back and into the filter boot?
I appreciate that maybe that's perfectly normal and you just don't normally see it as there's a filter/inlet tract attached. It would be good to know though.

Twins / A10 exhaust on A65?
« on: 21 January, 2018, 21:24:59 »
Just an idle musing really, first I have to sort out little things like having a side stand and making the right hand exhaust not fall off...

Anyway - I love the look of the A10 spitfire scrambler exhaust, just two high level pipes on one side (presumably with some internal baffles for back pressure). The closest I can find for my '71 bike is the Firebird scrambler, but the pipe widens out to fit the fat silencers. Are the exhaust ports in the same place between the two engines, or is that a complete non-starter?

Twins / Starting help on '71 A65 Lightning
« on: 11 January, 2018, 13:09:19 »
I have an A65 lightning, OIF. I'm having real trouble trying to start it. When running it pulls well and idles easily.
I can just about get it to fire up with full choke, tickle and no throttle, but that still takes a good minute or two of kicking.
I tend to get it on compression and then hoof it.
The bike's seen better days, one of those "barn find American imports" with a possibly genuine 5k miles on the clock. And flames painted on the tank. I think someone in the 70s bought it, painted it and put short exhausts on, chucked it down the road (it had a bent yoke among other damage!) Then threw it in the back of a shed for decades.
It did have no filters or connections to the air box at all, just the bare back of the carb, I've added some cone filters for now, but they may have made it a bit worse. I'm going to try taking them off this weekend. See if that helps.
Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks, Dan
Video of me trying to start it:

Definitely a work in progress!
