Twins / A10 clutch modification

Afternoon all. Decided to strip and inspect my clutch plates yesterday due to a persistent clutch drag and almost impossible finding neutral when idling.
I have a 6 spring clutch with nyloc nut adjustment. The metal plates between the friction plates dont fit the clutch basket snug, theres almost like  a back-lash between the two where the metal plates have worn against the basket. Is a tolerance acceptable or should they sit nice and snug over the basket?
The basket itself looks fine, just the metal plates look to be worn at the basket contact but are nice and smooth on the faces with no heat spots.
Ive been told to fit a 4spring clutch off a triumph, anyone got any knowledge of this modification?

Evening all, been working on my 1960 A10 golden flash today as ive had an issue with the clutch since ive owned it and i thought enough is enough.

Since total restoration it has spent most of its life in a heated garage with little use and when it was restored, new clutch plates and clutch cable were fitted along with many other new items. The main issue has always been the bike creeps in 1st gear with the clutch fully engaged and i can never find neutral when its idling so riding it is a pain.

When i recomissioned it for the road, all oils were changed. When riding, i found i was having clutch slip when pulling under load in 4th mainly. That issue was fixed by some adjusting of the clutch cable at the handle control by putting in some more slack. However, the bike still has its same annoying issues mentioned.
What ive found:-
1) my clutch arm on the gearbox sticks out past the casing almost at a 30degree angle and is not parallel to the casing.
2) my clutch cable is around 51.5inches outside diameter.
3) the clutch springs look to have been adjusted so around 3 or 4 threads of stud stick out past the 6 nyloc adjusting nuts.
Here's what i think.. the clutch cable is too long so they have compensated by adjusting the gearbox clutch lever to take up some adjustment as when the lever is parallel, i run out of adjustment at the handle bar.
I also think the lever is then at the incorrect angle losing some mechanical leverage/advantage. I also think the springs are too tight. So what i plan on doing is:-
1) buy a 48inch clutch cable
2) adjust it all correctly with the lever parallel at the gearbox and ensure i have 1/4 inch play at the lever
3) Adjust the springs.
Any further advice or any issues with my plan or my diagnosis please offer your advice.

Twins / A10 carburettor model

Afternoon all, hope you are keeping safe at this time. Im looking for advice re: A10 carburettors.

I have a restored and immaculate 1960 golden flash. The carb on the bike now is an Amal monobloc with 389/67 stamped into the casting of the carb flange. I was under the impression the bike should have a monobloc 276 carb? However im not so sure. This could have been an upgrade or just a quick replacement at some point perhaps.
I have overhauled it with new parts and jets etc and it works great and is jetted to bsa recommendations. But if it isnt correct, i may require an original item.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Hi, looking to recommission my 650 twin in time for the spring months. For oil choice, would you all recommend a 20/50 oil for engine, EP 80/90 gear oil and a SAE 20 for the primary chain case? Might as well check the fork oil too so any recommendations on that too?
Also, any recommendations on someone decent to refurbish my k2F magneto?

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for a magneto refurb on my BSA A10.
Its the standard Lucas K2F mag.

I've found a company called Brightspark magnetos who look like they do a thorough job.. replacing cam rings etc.

Twins / BSA A10 fuel taps

Hi all,

Got my lovely 1960 A10 out for a run earlier.

I noticed the fuel tap on the main feed side is dripping and has got worse since i last put it away. Is there a tap rebuild solution for this issue?
Or can i get new fuel taps?

What do other users usually do?

I'd like to keep the original taps if possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

Twins / Carb to airbox

Hi all,

My 1960 A10 runs the amal monobloc 389 carb and its original standard airbox. The intake area of the carb however, has fine threads on show as if something should be threaded onto it to maybe form a connection between that and the airbox.

It used to just have a piece of old rubber pipe pushed over the two to make a join (between carb and airbox) but it looked old and nasty and fell off.
The pipe just pushed over the threads that are on show. It can't be right like that surely?

I notice that from AMAL, you can buy an AMAL "air intake" tube that looks like it threads onto the carb. Does some sort of rubber coupling go onto that and then connect to the airbox to form a nice seal? If there is a rubber like this available, where do i get one from?

Any help on this topic would be great. Just trying to make the bike look as original and as tidy as possible.

Twins / BSA A10 oil

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum but have owned my lovely 1960 A10 golden flash matching numbers bike for a few years now.
Im looking to give it a dam good freshen up and service.

What engine and gearbox oil should i use? Also, what oil filter maintenance is needed? Ie. Are they gauze washable items?

Will be visiting the amal website for a carb rebuild kit too as my jets are a bit iffy.

Any help would be appreciated.
