The location of the usb connection box on the handlebars is a bit clunky and some have said its a bit unsightly. I also found it got in the way when fitting the sat nav bracket.
Its easy to flip it so it is under the handlebars as per the photo (that I have probably forgotten to attach). Just undo the 2 cap head screws attaching it to the mounting bracket and mount it upside down. You wil find that to get the bracket to fit flush in this position you need to tweek the bracket slightly but I didn't bother and just did up the screws until they were nipped bit not over tight. You need to remove one of the rubber cable tidies on the handle bar to free up the little extra cable length you will need.

Although the attachment to the bracket sounds like a bit of a bodge it has remained solid for several hundred miles.

I am very sorry to have to report that South Derbyshire member Bryan passed away on Tuesday in hospital following a long illness.
I am sure his many friends within the entire BSA community will share our deep sadness but also very many happy memories of Bryan. Our love and condolences go to Marie and all of Brian's family and friends.

The Star and Garter / Posting photos
11 October, 2024, 07:20:18
I am sure this has been well covered before and I did a search but couldnt find any info so can someone advise. Other than including a photo as an attachment is the only way to post one to first upload to a hosting site? IE it is not possible to insert photos directly. If so can anyone advise a good non-subscription site.
Many thanks

Twins / Chronometric speedo under-reading
29 April, 2024, 12:41:12
The chronometric speedo on my Super Rocket has started under-reading. I am suspecting the mechanism has just got  a bit gummy so thinking about taking the mechism out and without dismantling, drop it in the ultrasonic cleaner. Has anybody else experience of this issue and fix?

PS I could take it to Chronometrics where the first thing Russell will do is an utrasound clean, but I just fancy having a go myself (and justifying buying an ultrasound cleaner)

Bantam / Carb settings for big bore piston
22 April, 2024, 08:20:15
I had to have the barrel of my d14 175 overbored and fit the Rex Caunt Suzuki piston. Since then the engine has sufferred a knock when it warms up. I have checked that the piston is not hitting the head or fly wheels. I found a dent had developed on top of the piston below the spark plug which I initially thought was due to contact. However increasing the distance to ensure clearance (extra washer on plug, thicker head gasket) had no effect.
A mate suggested it could be pinking and that I try a slide with a smaller cutaway.
This had reduced the knocking but not entirely so perhaps it is a carburation issue (I had not made any changes to the carb from the original setting.

Has anyone else had similar experience and can offer advice?

PS I am running the small bore exhaust pipe because the engine in in a D1 frame. At 175cc it was happy with this however

Lightweights / BSA Sunbeam scooter timing
28 July, 2023, 10:58:57
I have fitted boyer igntion to my sunbeam 250 twin engine. The manual gives timing for full retard (5deg) but the boyer required setting at full advance.
Can anyone advise (TTJohn?) what the full advance setting would be in degrees btdc?
cheers

Twins / Boyer Bransden not retarding!
25 February, 2023, 10:28:15
Luckily the MKIV Boyer fits straight onto the Sunbeam scooter twin engine. To make life even easier they have an external flywheel so I was able the scribe ignition timining marks so strobing.
When I initially set up the igniton and timed it all worked out well; 5deg at tickover and about 20/25 at higher revs.

Subsequently I've had to strip the engine to attend to an oil  leak and on putting it all back together the ignition no longer retards! (you set these at full advance and little creatures inside the black box turn it back to retard at slow engine revs). That is , it is permanently at full advance with about 5deg variation with engine revs.

I have triple checked the timing set up and checked the voltage to the black box which is 12.4v (these systems will go full advance at low voltage).

Any suggestions what might be causing this or other tests would be most welcome.
....one day I might finally get this thing rideable!

The Star and Garter / Taking my bike to Europe
07 February, 2023, 10:04:23
Can anybody let me know where I can find the definitive rules/requirements for taking my BSA (trailered) to EU. I have booked for the Dutch Camp but haven't crossed the sea post-brexit.

Additionally, can anyone point me in the direction for riding my bike to and around the Republic of Ireland?

Many thanks
