I recall having a difficult time finding the correct springs for my 4 spring.  Some vendors have the wrong item.  One finally sent me a set that were cut and filed to size.  They did work.
Sorry I don't recall more details.  Must start taking notes.  You may need to experiment to find what works.

I'd say it is. I still have a small leak there after careful o-ring selection and installation.
The manual explicitly says not to use any sealant but I say do what you have to do.

I forgot about the step but it is important that the thick plate is hard against the clutch centre to get it square.

The clutch center has a "step" in the grooves where the first, heavier plate goes on.

I struggled with the oil union sealing on my Lightning and found a source here in USA for square o-rings in a multitude of sizes.

Actually bought a bag of 100 each of 2 sizes, slightly different to fit the slightly different parts I was dealing with.
I'd be willing to drop a few in an envelope for anyone that needs them. Just PM an address.

No parts manual?  The sludge trap itself is 68-0185

The info you need on the rod bearings is in the manual.  If it's dirty it's surely worn.  May need a regrind.
Use Plastigauge and carefull measuring to insure correct bearing size. 

How's your timing side bearing?

Do yourself a favor and download a parts and a repair manual.

I went through similar issues with my 4 spring on an A65.
As I recall, the first plate to go on is a thicker plain plate with its own part number and it may need to be forced onto the hub.
There was a small step on the hub.  Here's a photo from mine:

Once I figured that out I had other issues finding the correct springs and finally modified some by cutting to length.
The four spring clutch now works great though!  Very light pull on the lever and shifts smooth!

Wondered if someone might think that! Im aware how the cup fits and what it's purpose is. I can assure you the actual metal thickness is .033 the overall depth very much more! I checkedwith SRM and they were a little surprised as the originals should be around 25 thou. Still to much to sort my problem. Thanks to all for your thoughts and suggestions. Dave

So the cup came from SRM ?  Maybe ask around at other vendors.  Mine was 18 thou.  Maybe you'll find one you can use alone with no shims to make up your float.
I had an early crank and late cases along with other anomalies and need to shim 60 thou worth. I skipped the shim cup.

Wait, your shim cup is 33 thousands?  No.
The way the shim cup fits it seats on the bearing inner so it's whole width is not applied to your needed end float.
Only the thickness on the shim cup metal itself will factor into the float.
Then BSA offered 3,5 and 10 thousand shims that fit inside the cup as needed to result in 1.5 -3 thousand end float if I remember correctly.
Don't get cute and shoot for less float than that.  You will have problems.

The cup is not actually required but the crank has a radius so if you buy shims elsewhere they have to have an inner diameter larger than the radius.
Without the cup though, the shims may kind of shift around and not be ideal.

I think I discovered three but at least two different shim cup sizes fitting different bearings inners so check with your vendor.

Be careful not to tighten that pilot jet to hard.  You don't want to deform the needle or jet.
If you are trying to start the bike with the pilot screw "nipped up", there's your problem.
From the gently closed position unscrew the pilot 1 1/2 turns.
Put the needle height back to the middle.

So the bike was hard to start and you've got a new ignition and carb and it's still hard to start.  Hmmm.
Are you getting any sign of ignition?  Any popping or almost starting?
If your spark looks weak it will be even worse under compression.  You should see a fat blue spark.
When flooded, try starting with the throttle full open.  That should clear out the gas a bit and just might start it.

What do you have for coils?

Condensers good?

Keep at it!
