Which BSA do you ride? / Re: One of my BSA's
« on: 17 May, 2019, 07:00:23 »
One for sale here in Aus. I have seen a few here in the past, and a few 500js  as well.
I struggled with a 34 G for years. It was incomplete and I collected so many parts, mostly for the wrong years, and eventually gave up. Old story; so many people with the bits I needed but unwilling to part with them in case I decided to sell my bike!

I will be pleased to have a go but I'm not a photographer of any note! There is a great video of a Spanish bike being restored somewhere on the net.
There were "civillian" versions sent here, as well as the Police versions which had a modified fork to accept the 70 TLS brake. Mine has the comical brake and I am going to add  a 73 disc front end. Strangely, I found a complete TR7T  front wheel in the garage under a load of stuff. It has the original tyre. Goodness knows when I aquired that! 21 inch should be interesting (if it fits..axle size and all) .
I'll get back in a couple of weeks after my upcoming holiday.
Phil

Happy to say I no longer need the pics. I got the whole bike. Bought as advertised, " triumph T65". I removed the Triumph tank badges and found an extra screw hole on the tank, underneath- the original mount point for the BSA tank badge. "Tanks" again for responding.

You are right, I should have given the year and not just the model (T65). The bike is one of those oddities that appeared from time to time in the company's history, in this case, in 1973. Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

Thanks Bob. The underside of that tank dosen't look like what I expected a four gal OIF tank to look like, in that it shows an eliptical "cutout" for the top end. It also appears curved but then that may be the angle. Anyway I will press on. I get my bike tomorrow with the Triumph 4 gal fixed.

That is a worrying picture indeed! It is an early seventies  breadbox four gallon tank is it?. If so I've got Buckleys chance of finding one and will have to make do with a substitute.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated

Can anyone show me pics of the tank, particularly the underside of the tank showing the position of the taps?

Thanks Julian. I have two copies of that one. (bought one years ago and forgot I had it)
I really want to know if they ever made an illustrated one or do we use the TR6 book.

Was there ever an illustrated T65 parts book?

Good stuff! Although the info is not conclusive, it seems possible the BSA did not survive long enough to get the lower frame in production.
Thank you to those who have contributed, and keep those cards and letters coming!

Thanks for the replies.
There may well have been TWO part numbers for a revised frame. If I could find the equivalent of a second version of the update schedule above, one tabled earlier, maybe that would answer the question. Why say this? Well there was a BSA Lightning sold here a couple of weeks ago on ebay that had an Ivory frame which was reputably a replacement frame for a typically faulty first run of the grey frame. The bike came here by way of America. The frame number was not in the same format as the regularly listed ones.
If only we could find the head of the BSA "Frame Department" for a recollection or two!!
If I could find the thing, somewhere in my piles of paper is a book with the manufacturing specs of the UH bikes. It was the copy of one of the engineers working there, and from memory it did have some of those blue headed update sheets, plus memos about "stuff" from other people in the tech side. I just need a week to sort the stuff out.

Twins / OIF frame upgrade

Did any BSA's get the frame upgrade which is generally reported as being effected in 1972? I have yet to see one with a lower seat height. Can anyone enlighten me? Phil
