Singles / Re: C15 charging system

Thanks Adrian. Yes new to me, the bike was a runner when I bought it but don’t know whether it was charging correctly. As soon as I got it the throttle cable broke and I didn’t try to start it again as I was doing a complete rebuild on the engine anyway. Don’t notice any change in brightness of the lights when revving. Should the output be the same from each wire?

Got my C15 up and running but not sure it’s charging properly. When I got it the stator had green, white and orange wires so looks like it had been rewired  at some time. These were wired into the loom so I chased back to find what colour they connected to on the loom and connected up the same when rebuilding. With the engine running and either no lights or side lights the ammeter just moves into positive when revved slightly. However when I switch the dip/main beam on it goes to between 6 and 8 discharge I understood that the charging is boosted by the 5th and 6th coils in the stator kicking in when dip and main come on so the battery doesn’t discharge.

I’ve checked the wiring via the ignition and light switches and it looks like the circuits are right. I’ve tried swapping the alternator wires around but can’t find a combination that boosts when on main. I did find one that charged at 4 amps positive with no lights on but this would presumably cook the battery. Any one got any thoughts as I’m relatively clueless on electrics other than following wiring diagrams.

Thanks Both, I'll try Gaggs and I'll have a look around the Stafford show this year as I'm in no rush with the bike still in bits. Backstop would be a replica replacement, not ideal but at least they are available.

The drive for my c15 (2:1) speedo has a piece of cable stuck in it and I've tried everything I can think of to get it out. Is there anyone that does spares  for the drives these days or is it a case of sourcing a whole drive. Presumably the teeth on the cogs differ depending on the ratio's so I can't just get any ratio and replace the driveshaft in my drive.

Singles / Re: Cleaning the oil tank?
« on: 15 July, 2018, 19:02:23 »
I'm restoring a C15 and have just cleaned the oil tank out prior to repainting. I didn't think it would be too bad as the oil looked quite clean when I drained it. I was wrong. The bottom of the tank was full of thick black sludge and once I'd rinsed it out with petrol I was left with a residue of fine grit in the bottom. I ended up washing thoroughly with hot soapy water (washing up liquid - yes I know it has salt in it!) and rinsed with loads of hot water. Thankfully the British summer's been kind and an afternoon outside dried it out nicely. Now to see what's left in the engine & sludge trap  :-\ ........
