Singles / Ammeter reading
« on: 13 April, 2019, 12:58:48 »
Just fitted new battery and Dvr2 regulator to my 1954 B31. All seems OK apart from the ammeter reading which flutters around zero until I've ridden a few hundred yards or revved the bike for a while on the stand. It then settles down and shows a steady charge. Once it settles down it stays good. It was doing this on the previous regulator. Is my dynamo misbehaving?

Thanks for information. DVR ahead on votes, although the VReg2 also looks good. It will be one of the two.

Last week I found my battery flat (B31 with Thorspark ignition). When I tried to charge it the charger declared the battery failed and cut out. The battery is 2yrs old and has a less than ideal time, having been charged, left to go flat , charged etc. The bike has a fairly cheap voltage regulator fitted in place of the old electro-mechanical original. Before I get another battery I am interested to hear views on cheap vs pricey solid state regulators. Are there any I should avoid, any which are generally recognised as being best?
Having fitted electronic ignition I am keen to have a good battery. And yes, I'm wondering about having the magneto overhauled to avoid all this. But it's more money!

Wrap heavy solder wire round spoke?

Good site. I used the information on dynamos to check mine out. Nice and ckear and I got the dynamo working, saving a large overhaul bill.

I've put Thirspark on my B31. Only 50 road miles done so far, but lots of starts at home while setting things up. It's easy to fit (on a B31) and the bike fires up first or second kick hot or cold. I'm pleased with it although I might replace some of the wiring as the bright red and green wiring supplied looks a bit out of place.

I seem to remember mine  being a bit wobbly with same  bearing fitted ( a two row ball bearing). Have you tried putting the clutch together and just nipping things up as a trial. I think the wobble will go away when it's all assembled. Worth five minutes test - no need to bend over tab washers etc while you try it.

Thanks for pictures - looks same as my stand. I hadn't thought of  your ramp idea which will be handy in the garage. My concern is that I would find it impossible to get a wheel out for puncture repair at the road side with my current stand.
There must be a way to sort this. Where there's a will .........

No problem Phil.
The problem with your seal may not be visible to the naked eye. It may have worn or it may have aged and hardened to the point it is no longer elastic.
Either way , glad you got it out.

Here's a couple of pictures of the bike and its' stand. It looks to me as if the bike has gone too far over the stand and is settled at the back, which fits in with the effort required to get it off the stand. The detail picture shows the stop on the stand butting up against its' mating face on the frame.  Does this look the same as any other B31's? The distance from pivot point to bottom of the foot is 210mm.

I have tremendous trouble getting my B31 on and off its' centre stand. When the bike is on the stand both wheels are on the ground. I can't feel any severe wear in the stand or it's pivot, but haven't actually stripped it down yet. Does anyone have dimensions for this stand ( leg length in particular) as I'm beginning to think its too short. Or perhaps there is a stop missing which is letting the bike go too far over centre and settling too low at the rear. Any help gratefully received as this is going to do my  back in one day!

By the way, when fitting the new oil seal  I found its metal housing to be quite soft and the seal particularly difficult to get entered square into the gearbox. May be teaching you to suck eggs but set yourself up with something to drive it in with rather than tapping all round its' circumference. A big socket or piece of tubing etc.
