Took side cover off & greased the "three balls in pockets mechanism".  Seems better.  A ride will confirm....

I have stock original spoked wheels on my '71 Lightning. The chrome rims are in good shape but the spokes and hubs could do with a refresh. Anyone done this? Advice?

Lubricating the cable didn't help much. I believe the cable on this bike is the original. So I replaced it with a new one which, as it turned out, wasn't too bad a job. The inspection cover which provides access to the cable made it quite convenient. Thanks all for your input.

Lubed the cable a little with Silicone Lube.  It's much improved but could be better.  I'll get some proper cable lube and do it some more.

The bike is a '71 Lightning 650. Changes gears nicely, just a really stiff clutch handle. I have a new replacement clutch cable and I'll try installing it. haven't done this before but doesn't look too challenging. (I think)

My clutch (cable?) is VERY stiff.  Is changing a clutch cable a big job?

Any suggestions as to what I could use to match this paint?

Great info all - thank you.
So if I have it right, a correct example for an early 1971 plate issued in Essex, might be "FVX 653J"?

Hello.  I've recently purchased the second BSA Lightning I have ever owned (hence the user name).  It has been several decades since I owned my last one - a '66.  It's a '71 OIF model, very low miles and in very nice condition.  I may take it to some local shows (we have them here in Canada too!) and I'd like to get a period correct "show only" U.K. number plate made.  What I would like to know is what format would be correct for a number plate that would have been issued in the U.K. in 1971 for this bike.  For example, if the bike had been licenced in Essex in July 1971, what would the letters and numbers format be? Much appreciated!
