Any one know -How many engine spacers are there on 1970 A65 what side do they go on and what thickness
Also does anyone know where i can purchase a spanner to tighten barrel base nuts thanks

Just going through the parts book for 1970, there are 2 x spacers listed: part #10 (68-4906) and part #17 (27-5676) in the diagram, as far as I can see!. One supplier gives the dimensions of 68-4906 as 7/16 x 7/8 x 3/16. Another gives the dimensions of 27-5676 as 3/8 x 1 x 1/16. All dimensions in inches.

The base nuts are 5/16" UNF and require a 1/2" AF spanner, I believe?

Just to add that the parts diagram is a bit misleading and assume the spacers going between the engine and the frame!

Hi,

I have not long taken an engine out of a frame and did not find any washer/spacers on the engine bolts. I suspect that the spacer numbered '10' on the diagram is there so that the bracket for the horn does not foul the frame lug.
Spacer number 17 could well be to take up any gap between engine and frame but the diagram suggest that it is out board of 16, the washer.
I would suggest sitting the engine in the frame and measure any gap and slide in any washer/spacer needed to fill the gap.  You may find however, that there is no gap or such a small gap that just tightening the bolt will close it up without much effort.

Hi,
I have always had a packing piece and forgotten which side to refit it. However once the engine is in place, if needed, it will be obvious which side has the gap to fill.

Best wishes...

thanks everyone for the help ,

Hi,
     A 1970 built bike, 1971 season, could have a BiHex nut 21-0692.

Best wishes...

My 1970 engine is fitted with hex nuts but, if it does have BiHex nuts fitted, you just need to use a 1/2" AF ring spanner - I believe? Although it needs to be thin walled to fit as in the link below:

My early 1970 model year production A65 Firebird (begins HD and only 300ish numbers from start of 00101) has 3/8" crankcase studs and came with the bihex nuts, plus has the (not for long I believe) 5/16" spacing on the middle front 2 studs. This means you need a special base gasket or just stamp elongated holes for them. I have no reason to think the engine has been 'messed' with either. I also have the bihex's on my OIF Lightning, so for that I slightly 'altered' a 13mm combination spanner which does the job fine.
