Hi Derek

Reference the tank--No I have a far worse one than that. Was chrome. Picture shows it in derust bath.(Iput them here when I was doing the job)Lotsa dents etc We'll see. I think I got most of the rust out

Just got a very good complete brakes and all front hub and took it to have "new" wheel made.

If its OK with you folks I would like to post this restoration bit by bit--the straightforward things and the problem areas. I don't intend to post costs or any other nasties. But I am more than happy to answer cost related questions.

If it gets tooooooooo boring just say so and I'll at least know.

Sounds good Mike bring it on. Lots of pics.

I meant to ask what the tank was like before you started, i have used the reverse electrolysis on the inside but never the outside of the tank, it looks as if it has come out pretty good.

Hi Derek.

I dunked the complete tank and it cleared the external rust as well. The chrome is in a far worse state than it looks--seriously cracked and pitted used a wire wheel to remove all the chrome flakes.(fortunately pitting doesn't go into tank itself).but no longer usable as a chrome tank.

It cleaned all the rust off outside leaving it with a sound surface for paint job. I've put a very thin layer of filler all over the outside and then worked it back so that at least its smooth. Next either an etch primer or a simple high build primer. I'm awaiting advice on that, but I doubt the value of etch in the circumstances.

So here's hoping. The other side of the tank has a lot of small dents.

Keeps you out of trouble i suppose!  ;)

I bought a tank off ebay i think its an A50 cyclone tank, it looks like a catalina tank but no breather it needs stripped and painted that's why i was interested.

cheers

Hi Mike, be really interested to follow your posts I'm in a similar position my self, frame p coated, hubs ready for wheel rebuild, yolk on, forks ready to assemble, waiting for a few bits so I thought I'd start on panels  and tanks, fuel tank is in fair condition bits of rust inside and out so just pondering best way forward with it, it will need chrome and paintwork done so I think ill take it to the local platers and get it stripped first and see what comes back.Cheers Dave.
