Wheel hubs

Hi chaps/chapesses
Some of you may remember my woes.
At the moment I am trying to solve a cracked rear wheel hub.
The existing hub is I think cast iron.
However I found one advertised as alloy could this be a later type and can it be used instead
of the cast one??
Any comments appreciated as usual.

C15 full width hubs are cast iron. The one described as alloy is probably a mistake by the seller.

The crack is from a spoke hole.
Very fine about 1 inch in length parallel with the spindle

Hi,

     It sounds like a spoke has been over tightened in the past, I would replace the hub.

If I couldn't get a replacement, I would strip it out and carefully, check it for other cracks (using penetrant spray or magnetic crack detection). You've probably heard of wheeltappers, tapping/ringing the hub when it's stripped down will give you a good indication of its health.

If I was confident it was safe to use after a repair, I would drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop it migrating. Braze and lightly tighten the spoke, as one spoke left like that would be okay but I would monitor regularly.

I go along with that, however I would play "belt and braces" and build up about 1/4" or so on the periphery parallel to the split and a good 1" either side and hope to stop it breaking out. Still need to monitor it.
