Fork Stanchion Bottom Nut
« on: 06 March, 2017, 18:43:49 »
Hi

Does anyone know what size the Fork Stanchion Bottom Plug is please, the part number is 41-5130.  I want to purchase a socket to fit it but it seems an odd shape/size.

I normally just use a large adjustable spanner but you usually have to apply a bit of heat to undo them. Not sure it's takes a hexagonal socket because it has rounded corners on the hexagonal nut. Closest is probably 11/16 Whitworth.

Thanks Arthur

We managed to removed them OK with a large adjustable spanner, I just thought I'd get something 'proper' to assemble the forks again.

Large adjustable it is then  :)

The part number for the tool you are looking for is 61-3003. I bought mine from Lighting Spares some while ago. I would try asking Draganfly if they have one because they bought all the stock when Lightning Spares closed down. C&D Autos might also be worth a try.

Thanks Trev,

However the part number you quote is for the tool for the Top Fork Nuts, not the Bottom Plug.

When I contacted Draganfly Motorcycles asking if they had the Tool/Spanner p/n 61-3003 (as per that tool shown on the diagram) they said "no, that spanner is too small to fit the bottom fork plug..."

I am very much afraid that it is Draganfly that have got it wrong. This is what BSA service sheet No706 list as the tools required for telescopic fork dismantling, 'A', 'B', 'M' group, and C10, C11G, and C12 models.

61-3001 fork top nut spanner
61-3003 fork plug spanner
61-3005 oil seal holder assembly tool
61-3006 oil seal extractor
61-3007 oil seal assemly tool
61-3350 fork leg assembly and removal tool.

The service sheet says this: Grip the shaft in a vice using  soft jaw clamps on the unground portion of the shaft and unscrew the gland nut (f) Fig X4 Service tool 61-3003 is designed for this purpose.

Quite clearly Draganfly have no idea what they are talking about!

Well I wouldn't knock Draganfly as a firm as I've always had very good service from them, but the person I spoke to on this occasion certainly got it wrong.

Looks like everyone is right.

See the Parts Service Bulletin extract below - BSA changed the size of the hex but it does not say when.

Have just found my spare A65 fork plug and it takes an 11/16 box spanner - but I dont know if it is an original or revised part!

Well that's a turn-up for the books...

Thanks for that Julian,

I have just measured the Plugs I have fitted and they are 1-3/16" across the flats, so I guess I have the larger/later version.  However, the BSA WD B40 Parts Book (revised 1973) I have still gives the part number of these Plugs as 41-5130 rather than the revised part number of 97-2708, but that's not unusual for the BSA/Army parts books.

So, I wonder if they introduced a new Tool/Spanner as well?

Edit: Just noticed that Draganfly list Tool 61-3003 as being 1-3/16" as well.  Hmm...

My fork plug is also 1 3/16 inch across flats.
