B40 wiring advice and spacer advice
« on: 20 February, 2018, 17:37:36 »
Hi
I am in the process of putting my B40 (1961) back together. 2 questions I hope can be answered:

1. I cant remember the order of the electrical components that are fitted under the seat on the crossmember. Can anyone help? Also does the loom go under the frame tube or to one side of it?

2. I have a distance piece about 7/8 x 3/8 inch which I am sure came of one end of the swinging arm. I have fitted it to the left hand side so that it makes access to the bolt and grease nipple better. It looks like it should be there but my concerns are a) I cannot find reference to it in any parts diagram and b) the swinging arm bolt is only going into the swinging arm shaft by about 3/8 inch because of the spacer.
Should I leave it or take it out before I get any further with the rebuild?  I have looked at many pictures on the internet and enlarged them but cannot see for certain what is on the bike.

ps there is a spacer on the parts diagram 108  41-4055  Not sure what this is for. It could be the spacer I have

Cheers

Adrian

The swinging arm spacer is part 40 4213 and it fits on the offside/right side.

Diagram from 1965 parts book because I dont think it is shown in the 1961 book.

Key also from 1965 book showing it fitting on the offside.

41 4055 is a spacer with a smaller hole than the one above.

When I restored my B40 a few years ago, I positioned the components coil, horn, rectifier from left to right looking forward. Harness passed down RH side of top tube. Parts diagram is a little confusing. Part 41-4055 is listed as engine/frame spacer and the usual places are either between engine and frame for either the bottom or front bolts though I can't remember from memory if the B40 has either.

After a bit more research, I think spacer 41-4055 is intended to be the stop light distance collar. That said, I notice that neither my C15 or B40 has it fitted and so I need to look into why it is necessary. This probably also answers an earlier question as to why the LH swinging arm pivot bolt needs to be longer than the RH one - it's to accommodate the distance collar!

Thanks for the advice
Here is a picture of the collar in place on the left hand pivot. I originally thought one of the bolts was a bit longer but mine are the same length. I think if the spacer is not needed I shall remove it

The picture shows the stop light switch fitted to my C15 without the spacer fitted. From this it can be seen that there is actually no room for the spacer to perform any useful function. My B40 is exactly the same. Can't really see why you would need a spacer between the bolt and switch mounting plate.

I had a look at another B40 this afternoon - had the spacer in the same place as mine!

Both my C15 and B40 are quite late models. From the parts books, it looks as though the earlier models had thinner lower ends on the rear sub-frames where the bolts go through to attach it to the swinging arm spindle. In these cases, the spacer is presumably there to correctly position the stop light switch relative to the brake pedal. On the later models, the ends of he sub-frame are much wider and hence the spacer wasn't required.
