C15 timing/gearbox cover puzzle

I have recently acquired a 1959 C15. The timing/gearbox cover has a hole near the kickstart (photo) whose function I cannot trace. It seems to be fitted with an electrical case grommet (with a hole). Any idea what it is and what I should do with it

I used to have a Cub with a blind grommet there, It was for access to the clutch cable

Yes, access to the clutch cable. This enables easy fitting of a new cable without poking around in hope from the rear.
