B44 oil leak
« on: 26 September, 2017, 07:29:57 »
I had ridden my new B44 only a few times, maybe 50 miles.
Apart from a big end clanking, the gearbox sounded noisy.
I used a syringe to get oil in the tiny filler hole, up to the mark on the dipstick.
I wondered if the primary was also running dry.
I could not be sure which was the oil level screw. Rupert ratio did not seem to cover my model.
When I started up, oil was gushing out from the sprocket area.
I did a trip to a jazz concert, four miles away. The clutch was slipping badly, 50 mph max.
On the return it was almost back to normal.
I assumed that one of the seals was leaking, or perhaps missing.
I tried to order two new seals ,but could not find the part numbers for these.
I have difficulty bending down, but finally found the there were two small screws, together under the middle of the primary case.
These must be the level and drain plugs. I drained the excess oil and I think the problem is solved.
Then I read in the ratio book that the chain oiler was a problem, and should be removed. I will try that today.

I have looked for the chain oiler.
On my C15, the oiler is on the back end of  one of the case screws.
My B44 does not appear to have an oiler, but there is a hole, separate from the case screws.
This appears to be empty. Can anyone confirm if this is so?
This bike was built from separate parts, so the year 1969 my not be relevant to the engine.

A lot of owners just put a normal screw in the chain case oil feeder hole, to seal it up, I don't think it's really necessary to have an oil feed to the chain, as you cann lubricate that manually.

Thank you. I will do that if I open the chain case.

I have just done my second ride, about 40 miles. Outward, following Bantams at 30 MPH
Return, alone at up to 80 mph.
I found an oil leak was apparent. It was from the gearbox filler at the top. Strange?
The vibration was great. I lost the heat shield from the silencer, one headlamp bolt,
and my complete toolkit which was strapped on the rear mudguard.  About 50 pieces.
I managed to replace the lot today, from the boot sale.

Interesting point.
I want to keep the weight and cost down. For many jobs on a bike (Say engine bolts)
you need two spanners of the same size. Most new spanner sets come with the same size each end, so you would need to buy two sets.
I found Whitworth open end spanners with different sizes each end. Short ones for weight and space saving.
Photo shows chain lock, Black tape and plastic ties.Carrier tray is cut from a 5 litre plastic bottle. Red spray shows that they are whitworth.
I use yellow for metric and blue for AF types.
