1971 A65L Kickstart return spring

OK I give up.
What method do you use to fit this spring, been struggling with this for too long?
There is a video on youtube, but he has fitted it with the tang at the bottom...no good.
Even if fitted it with hook down, there would be very little tension and the tang fouls the case anyway.

Yes, bought one just for this job.
Trouble is, the spring distorts and the shaft rotates.
I can get the tang to vertical using a spring puller and screwdriver and tieing it with rope, but when I remove the screwdriver the spring jumps off the fixed screw.
Tried string but it snaps.
I'm using a hose clip to hold the tang plate against the boss.
Even tried rotating the tang plate engaged to the spring to no avail.
There must be a knack that I'm missing somewhere or maybe it needs two people?

I managed my A65 on my own and the washer even managed to stay in place whilst I put the outer cover on, I used a tie wrap to help the spring stay together but it really isn't a straightforward job.

Its difficult to see how the Japanese managed to take over actually!  :'(

cheers

Bob,
It's normally a straight forward job and takes about 3 minutes.
Put the spring onto the casing with the hook around the screw. Get a piece of thin strong cord, the stuff used on blinds is ideal. Loop the cord around the other hook on the spring and pull upwards, this pulls the hook on the spring up out of the way. Get the retaining washer and slide it onto the kick start spindle and put the flats into place. Lower the spring hook onto the the retaining washer hook and pull the cord out or cut it.
I hope that makes sense. it's straight forward once you have done it a few times.
I live over in Shiremoor, North Tyneside, if you need a hand on anything just send me a memo.

The above is a reply that I got when I had the same problem on my 1963 A65 and it worked perfectly.

Well, I don't know if pre-OIF A65's are different to OIF models, but the retaining washer hook should be at the top on my '71, according to the spares book.
Maybe I have the wrong washer or it's damaged in some way, but it wont fit with the hook at the bottom because it fouls the case.

Not done a late A65 ks spring but I observe that the spring and the spring plate are the same part number all years A65.

Illustration from 1971 workshop manual showing the spring.

Parts books dont always show the parts in correct place.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Julian, as the pic shows, the spring is of a different type, this the same as my workshop manual, wrong.
The spring in this pic shows a long leg slotted into a hole, in a lug, which is a part of the inner G/B cover.
I believe this type was fitted to singles?
The spring 68-3053 has two loops, one (inner) for the anchor peg (at 9 o'clock) and the other for the spring plate 68-3054, which sits slack at about 6-7 o'clock.
The spares book shows this arrangement with the spring plate hook/lug facing outwards at 12 o'clock, presumably when fitted.
I am unable to find any pictures of the spring and plate actually fitted.

I have been through all my 12 different A65 parts books;

1962, 1962/63, 1964/5, 1964/5 sports models, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1968 (Revised edition), 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972.

All these books show the spring as part 68 3053 and the plate as 68 3054. So same part all years.

Are you sure you have the correct parts?

Could you post some photos?

Thanks Bess, different to mine, my spring has 4 coils and the anchor peg is at 9 o'clock.

I think I have cracked it by fitting a different spring.
After rummidging through my bits I found an alternative, possibly from a tiger cub.
The hook on the spring plate didn't look the correct shape, so I heated it to red-hot and forged it to a better angle.
Haven't checked the action because of a clutch issue (clicking) which needs sorting.
Trying to add an attachment but when click preview, nothing appears... why is it so difficult to post pictures?

And then it appears after posting.
What happens if need to add text after the picture?

Incidentally this is what it looked like before stripping down.
