C15 primary drive oil level - question rephrased
« on: 20 August, 2017, 13:38:25 »
To put it slightly differently than my first post about this, as there were no responses.

I have followed the directions from the Service Sheets regarding primary drive oil level.

If I remove screw M (the second screw back) which is identified as serving as the level plug, no oil comes out even if I overfill it.

If I remove the screw behind that, it drains pretty much the entire amount that I put in.

Other than draining the case and then putting in a measured amount (1/4 pint) every time, I am unable to check the level.

Can anyone advise please?

You could remove the case to check that the level screw has a cutaway for the oil to issue.
Could be blocked or the wrong choice or screw or wrong outer case!

Thanks for your suggestions Mick.

I'm nor sure what you mean by the reference to a 'cut away' in the level screw. As I understand it, the screw merely acts to plug the drain hole - doesn't it?

I have explored the screw hole with a wire and it appears to 'blind'

If it is the wrong outer case, which is quite possible, it must still have a level plug somewhere. The question is, where?

This shows what the cutaway in the outer case looks like - A10 part but principal the same on C15.

Later unit singles, about 1969/70 had an obvious level plug on the outside fo the case.

Thanks Mick and Julian,
I'll follow the advice and take the cover off to check what is going on from the inside
