BTH magneto fitted to my A10
« on: 08 August, 2017, 09:19:59 »
As some of you know I have been having some real magneto dilemma's. There is an intermittent fault with my K2F which may be a quick fix but the waiting list for the specialists to do the job is up to 6 months and by that time summer is over.

Breaking down when you were 25 was fun but now it's a pain, so my way of thinking is chuck money at it until it stops becoming a pain and spend the time enjoying riding it, knowing there is a pretty good chance you will get home.

In this modern world, we want everything yesterday and waiting is becoming a rude word.

I contacted the guys at BTH magnetos in Milton Keynes, they make a new mag from scratch with a modern electronic ignition inside, they are a bit....well al lot pricey for the unit and coils, but they were on the shelf. So I drove up to them and collected it, and it was fitted the same day.

Fitting was a doddle, I had to buy a new non advance retard timing gear from Draganfly (£45), I made a small coil bracket and fitted the coils under the battery box, timing was so easy using the timing pin supplied.
Another good idea is the new mag has elongated mounting holes so you can slightly adjust the timing when running, by rotating the mag.

All I can say is they are an awesome piece of kit if you have the budget- All my A10 can say is thud, thud, thud, thud, thud, it has never ticked over so smoothly.

Looks like a very neat mounting with coils under the battery I had wondered about a good place for them.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Hi After reading yours, I've just been on their website and in truth ,yes, its a lot of money. However I have been quoted in the region of £700+ to have my M20 magdyno professionally redone by an extremely reputable company. Its also arguable that you have a product more fit for purpose in this era. (I am not knocking the traditional mags as we all know that they have given, and still give, sterling service, But when you have ongoing problems then maybe a rethink etc)
I know I can get my mag done cheaper but I also know you get what you pay for, or have a long wait for.
However at the mo this is on hold because I have an electronic system ready to put on M20. But its certainly a way I would consider.

I put a Boyer on my T140v about 10 years ago, best thing I have done it is still going strong.

Also on another note, my bike was not charging, the dynamo was lighting up a 12 volt bulb so I though it may be the regulator, so Draganfly sent me a modern day equivalent, a tiny module, once again fitted in minutes and now she is charging....£50 job done ! hopefully it will never need touching again.

Modern day "modifications" certainly have their place.

Mods - Perhaps we can have a section called modern day modifications.

I fitted a BTH to my Super Rocket about 15 years ago having got fed up with dodgy mag rebuilds.
It transformed the bike, both starting and running, and has been faultless.

And yet and yet... My BSAs have had excellent service and continue to do so from their K2Fs. Both were rebuilt over 30 years ago and are going strong. I'm off for a 300+ mile trip on the A10 tomorrow with a ferry to catch. Wouldn't do that if I didn't have confidence in the magneto - or the rest of the bike.

oh dear hope you haven't tempted fate there!

I have always had modern electrics fitted on any British bike I have owned, B44, C15 and now A65. I am hoping to start on the A10 soon but suspect the magneto needs rebuilt and going by the posts on here why not opt for reliable sparking!

just my opinion.
